AF 100 = no 1080 60p TM700 = 1080 60p @ $800, curious..

I know what overcranking is but it's seldom talked about when onezzes and zerozes are in the mix.. I guess it makes sense... "hey does your Bolex do 24p?".
 
Yeah even my HVX200 will overcrank, and play back in camera, but it does so within the confines of broadcast formats and frame rates, so your Avid, FCP, or plasma monitor can see it played back from file, or from camera. It's all good.
 
Ok, so the end result I'm looking for is what you get when you slow 60p down by a factor of 40% in a 24p timeline.
That's what the AF100 does, right out of the box.

So does the AF 100 write 60 singular images to the card every second at 1920X1080?
Yes it does.

No worries with playback, I just want to know what it's doing from second to second...
Well, see, there's the confusion then. What the TM700 does is record 60 images per second for playback as 60 images per second. In other words, the "live" look -- the "video" look. What the AF100 does is record 60 images per second, for playback at 24 frames per second -- the slow-mo film look.

So all along the AF100 has been doing what you want.
 
Ok, now I'm quadruple confused.. I don't know of a soul in the indy film world that would ever shoot anything above 30P for the purpose of displaying it at it's native standard.. I guess I need to check myself.. Whenever I say 60p, I'm really saying "the lowest acceptable standard of smooth slow motion"....
That's not what the TM700 does. The TM700 does it "live". The AF100 does it slow-mo.

Correct me if I'm wrong and in no way am I trying to insight an argument but, is it safe to say that if 60p for the purpose of slow motion is nowhere near happening in the broadcast market ( AF 100 = Broadcast Market ), that higher frame rates are worlds away from coming into fruition?
No, in fact it already has 60p for the purposes of slow motion. It's already come to fruition.
 
This also begs to ask.. Why would the consumer division even put 60p in the $800 Consumer camera the TM700 is?
Because numbers sell. Same reason camcorder manufacturers used to put "200x digital zoom" and then "300x digital zoom". Bigger numbers = more sales.

Not only is it 1920X1080 60p able, from the internets POV, it's the strongest and most advertised selling point.
Yep. See above. Numbers sell. But you can't actually USE it for anything...

PS: if bigger numbers = more sales.. they should step that whole nineteen hundred and twenty pixels by one thousand eighty pixels thing up a few notches don't ya think? I'm ready for some U-HD at least at the aquisition level : )

I've shot this way, using 1080 60p as my base standard. But it was more an experiement than anything else. You need to remember the challenge is not just the picture, but audio as well. We had to record to a Cantar X2 and do some "interesting" things in post. Bottom line: It's cool for certain things, but there is a reason it's not a standard playback. It actually reminds me a little of "Showscan" for those that remember it.. Showscan was a huge deal back then, think "HD for film".

Now here's the trick: I had to use a RED ONE to pull this off.. You said the little camera you had did it? That's cool, but there's a lot to makinig this something you can actually "show". Whatever.. Just wanted you to know I have done what you are speaking of, but it's not practicle, not by a long shot.

The thing that strikes me most about the little camera is the detail. The images in good outdoor lighting are incredibly sharp. Blows my HMC150 away and I'd say it's comparable or maybe even a little better than the HPX300 we use at work.

I'm not saying sharpness is everything, but still, surprising how a tiny 'consumer' cam is able to render so much more detail than the HMC/HVX/HPX line of prosumer cameras.

Shots with deep depth of field without and gain/iso are perceivably better on all accounts over my Canon 5D2, GH13.

hey Jay, I should have clarified from the start but I'm talking about 60p strictly for the purpose of using it for slow motion in a 24p timeline. I think 60p played back at it's native framerate looks awful and like Barry said can't really be done for real world purpose anyway.

I'm assuming the AF100 does not double it's bit rate when shooting in 60p to 24p over crank mode. Seems this would violate the standards for the in camera codec. I wonder what it's doing when spitting out info via HD-SDI?

Well... it doesn't double it, no. But it does massively increase the bitrate by about 50%. Which doesn't violate the standards because while the recorded bitrate is hugely increased well outside the standard, because the playback rate is set for slower it gets averaged out across the playback rate, so the net recorded bitrate appears lower, which fits within the standard. Clever solution.

HD-SDI is incapable of showing 1080/60p. It is not possible. The maximum that HD-SDI can support is 720/60p or 1080/60i; 1080/60p would require it to support twice the bandwidth. So when you go into overcrank mode, the AF100 embeds its 60p signal into an SDI-compatible 60i signal. You'll still see live monitoring.

The SDI output in overcrank mode? It'll be fine up to 30fps. After that it's half-resolution for some frames. Not really something you'd want to record.

Yeah, apparently people are somehow thinking that the overcranked footage is somehow "upressed 720p" or something, and that simply isn't the case. It's full 1080p all the way. The quality of the overcranked footage is just as high as the non-overcranked. The bitrate expands by 50% when you go into overcrank mode, up to about 35mbps.
 
I actually was a little amazed by the TM700 for its price. There is a comparison video vs. GH1 and some other camera, and the TM700 looks better in almost all situations, particularly low light and firelight.

Anyone have the scoop on what MANUAL CONTROLS this offers, and its pros/cons?
