AF 100 Good for a African Documentary?

HMC is not worth the money. You have to purchase separate XLR unit, for 1K more you'll get new Canon XF100, with LCPM, IR night shooting- very important for wildlife night shots, same size as HMC40. GH1 is inferior as still camera compared to T2i or 7D. For a trip like that to produce sellable stills I doubt GH2 is much better.

thats $1.6k more for the xf100 $3300 to the hmc40 $1700
granted the xf100 would perform better (it better! costing 1.6k more)
if budget was of no concern xf100 is better choice than the hmc40

for the dslr, i think its either 60d or gh2. i dont think quality is a big factor here but the availability of lenses. canons have more and better lenses than gh2. but gh2 has the best form factor and features impo.

nexto can do host a USB drive and make a copy to the internal drive and one to the hosted drive simultaneously. Voila! two copies. If that isn't good enough, after your done with that, you unmount USB drive one, mount usb drive 2 and sync drive 2 to the next, now you have 3 copies.

What happens if your laptop fails?

I've been using the Nexto NVSPro 2725 (I think that's the one) for over a year now. I've never had so much as a dropped frame or clip. It just plain works. Now, it's certainly advisable to double-backup your footage as quickly as you can. Relying on ANY one device isn't wise. But you can (and I do) use the Nexto to create a clone backup via USB.

And yes, it works with anything CF, SD or SxS based.
