AF 100 Firmware Upgrade Ver 1.16 Available

If this is true, Panasonic and/or third parties could make replacement top and side handles with not only start/stop buttons but also zoom rockers.

I am sure we will see people making custom ones in the future, but I would like to see Panasonic make one. Perhaps a pistol grip with a zoom rocker and just a small cable that connects to the back. That would be huge for handheld shooting.

I own the 45-175 mm X lens and the Manfrotto 521PFI remote controller. Unfortunately that remote controller doesn't have a zoom rocker. The 521P has start/stop and zoom controls, but on the other hand no focus or iris controls. Is there a remote controller, which has all 4 controls?

wow so close

if this works, those upcoming 12-35 & 35-100 would be sweet. we just have to wait for a manufacturer to build a grip with controls on it

Hi Guys, Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner. The Remotes that are on the market will control the new zooms, but it is not going to be with the same elegant smothness that we have gotten used to. I was delaying my response hoping to get one of the zooms from the consumer guys and give a first hand report. Maybe on Friday when I get back from SanFran I can give it a whirl.

Best,

Jan

That would be awesome. I use LANC pistol grip with my smaller camcorders like the one on here

I'm in the same boat... no upgrades for me yet... I have been reluctant to "fix" something that is working... any answer on this? Also, is there a list of issues addressed in the firmware update? I'm not so much concerned with the zoom issues.
Thanks

I'd like to know this also, can somebody please advise? :)

The controls already exist. However, I don't think the 12-35 and 35-100 have power zoom on them. Last I knew they were still in the "concept" stage, but I don't think the concept photos showed power zoom controls.

i meant the custom plastic grip with zoom buttons and stuff to replace the current af one :)

oh yeah i forgot about that. blerg. well we wont know until it comes out.

i really hope a new p2 af100 gets announced on NAB. id really invest on these new m43 lenses if so :D

Here is a small sample video I shot with the new Lumix X tele lens. This lens seems to be much more parafocal than the 14-140: The focus stays sharp while zooming and it can even focus while zooming! And the iris is very smooth: The AF100 shows stops increments of 0.1! I like this lens very much and I hope that the Power Zoom will also works with remotes.

Gugulino, do you have the 14-140? What is the difference in iris response between the two -- you say the Lumix X is "very smooth" -- is it fast? Does it respond immediately? On the 14-140 the response seems quite slow...

Yes, I own also the 14-140. With the 14-140 you can clearly see how the iris jumps from one stop to the other: It gets immediately darker or brigther. With the new X lens the luminance level stays always the same, also while zooming. Obviously not, when you have the iris at its widest and zoom in. But, you hardly notice the changes, because it has a continuos iris, like a cinema zoom lens, I think. When I point the camera from very dark regions to very bright regions, the iris reacts very fast in standard-auto mode and stops down the aperture. And also when I point around between regions with similar luminance, it seems that the picture from the camera has always the same brightness. It reacts clearly much faster then the 14-140. Compared to the 14-140 the new Lumix X lens is like heaven, also because of its parafocal feature.
Perhaps, I can find a sequence from my last shot where you clearly see how the auto-iris performs. A picture says more than words and a video even more :-D

Interesting. How about the zoom and focus action on that 45-175... does it have a manual zoom like the 14-140, or is it only the motorized zoom? And can you focus while zooming?

Yes, with the zoom ring you can also zoom manually, but it is a bit sluggish: When you stop turning the ring, it doesn't stop zooming exactly at the same time. It probably has something to do with the signal that comes from turning the ring and goes to the zoom motor, which is also active when you zoom manually. The advantage of this, is that zooming is much smoother, when you do it manually, than with the 14-140. Unfortunately, focusing while zooming does not work, either in auto nor in manual mode. But, the lens holds the focus very well when you zoom out from an object.

I made some further tests and it seems that while zooming the aperture does not adapt to different light conditions. I didn't noticed that under not-extreme-conditions, because the iris changes are so smooth. You don't have this jumps, as you have with the 14-140.
In summary: While zooming you can not focusing, nor change the iris. But, while zooming out or in it holds the focus on the object. With the 14-140 the focus was lost and then adjusted after zooming and even in between. With the new X lens, the focus stays as you set it before zooming during the whole zoom range.
I think, the new X lens is a huge improvement over the 14-140 and is much more useable for me.

I'm starting to think that yeah, if I had it to do over again, I'd definitely get the pair of Lumix X lenses instead of the 14-140. But I don't know if it's worth it to convert over now, when the fixed 2.8 zooms are on the horizon... in any case, I'm really glad to hear that there are substantial benefits to the Lumix X lenses, it makes me look forward to the 12-35 and 35-100 all the more! Thanks for all the reports, Gugulino!

i guess the electronic powerzoom makes it easier for the camera to calculate the change of focal length and it could easily focus on the fly compared to the 14-140 which is waiting for the user input to change zoom before adjusting focus. makes sense.
