Advice on working with lots of interview footage

Hi and thanks in advance for any advice here. I'm shooting lots of lengthy interviews with old freestyle skiers about the early days. I'm new to the digital age and am using 6 SDHC cards. I think I may have already made an error by changing the folder name from Private to the interview subjects name when I copied my cards by dragging the PRIVATE folder icon to my external hard drive then renaming the folder. The footage does appear though when I put it in FCP log and transfer.

Any recommendations on how to back up your footage before reformatting your cards for reuse. Also, when I open in FCP I'm using a ton of hard drive space and am maxed out. How do people handle this? Finally, any tips on best organizing interviews with FCP.

Lots a lot sorry. Any help w/one or all from you experienced experts is much appreciated.

Thanks!

See pg. 109 of your manual. It talks about not monkeying wiht your folders. I don't know if this is accuarte advice or not.

copy your files with avccam viewer and name the folders accordingly.

The file structure will remain intact.

Rename the folder back to PRIVATE and you should be OK. Just don't mess with the file/folder structure. If I have multiple cards I make folders named Card_1, Card_2 etc and just drop each card in to the appropriate folder.

How to back up your footage - that's easy. Buy an external drive and copy them all to it.

How to handle being out of HDD space? Buy more HDDs or larger HDDs. My Mac Pro has 4x 2TB HDDs in it now.

Organizing Interviews ..... like anything else, once in FCP rename the clips to reflect what they are, and organize in bins where appropriate.

Thanks everyone! Renamed folders back to PRIVATE and dropped them in a created folder with my Reel # and interview subjects name. No problems now.
