advice on macbook pro, etc..

Hello everyone,

I'm about to plunge myself into debt and buy a macbook pro and I was hoping someone could offer some much needed advice.

I shoot on dvx but plan to upgrade to an hmc 150 or hpx 170 in a year or so. I need to be able to edit long projects, particularly full length films, approx. 90 minutes. I had been editing on a pc but it died on me and tried to take me with it.

I had been intending to buy a macbook pro, 15 inch, 2.66ghz i7 processor, w/8GB memory and use it w/a 1TB 7200rpm external drive.

A dvxuser member pointed out that when editing long form projects it is often best to use an eSATA Raid set up w/a desktop comp. As far as Macbook Pro's, apparently only the 17" comes with the express card/34 slot necesarry for the eSATA adapter.

I would really love to edit with a laptop over a desktop because of the portability, right now I am moving around alot, but if it is foolish to do so, or overwhelmingly better to edit on a desktop, then a desktop it shall be.

So my questions are:

1) Is a macbook pro 2.66ghz i7 w/8GB + 1TB 7200rpm extrnl hard drive a powerful enough setup to edit a feature film-length high def project shot on an hmc 150 or hpx 170?

and if not,

2) Is an eSATA Raid drive (system?) running off of a macbook pro a better idea?

and if not,

3) Should I just get over the idea of portability and buy a desktop?

I'm sorry for this long post. I have so many questions. I learn so much from this forum every day. I realize this is a Final Cut thread but I figure you guys know your gear so this is the place to ask.

I sincerely thank you.

17" MBP will work, but so will an i7 15" with a Caldigit VR mini FW800 drive.

Don't over spend if portability is your objective.
