My daughter has asked me to film her school play tonight, could anyone give me some tips i.e. what custom presets to use and any other useful information.
Your gamma should be set to NORMAL to give you the most dynamic range. Reduce the color level to 25 or less and take the red level down to about -10 or -15. For some reason school play LOVES to use lots of red lights that look lovely to your eyes, but turns the image in-camera into a scene from Dante's Inferno.
Use zebra to set exposure and make sure to ride the iris so that it doesn't blow out somebody's white shirt. Set the low gain level to 0 db, the medium to 3 db and the max to 6db. Use manual focus if you zoom in because at full telephoto you tend to get depth of field and the autofocus favors the background instead of the subject, which is bad. Typically plays go for more than an hour before intermission so you might have to record in SD in LP mode, or risk missing the last few minutes. If you decide to go HD, skip all the miscellaneous announcements at the beginning.
It all went well apart from when I asked one of the teachers if a couple of the kids in the audience could scoot to either side of the camera (in a nice way), as I would have there heads in the shoot. She got funny; telling me this was about the kids and I was secondary. When I told her that the school was going to get a copy, her tune soon changed.
