i'm looking to upgrade my cpu, i have about $2,500 budgeted for a new machine. i primarily edit short films in FCP Studio shot in 720p, working on a feature, i also run AECS3 along with the entire adobe suite for graphic design, motion graphics, etc..

right now i'm looking at the new iMac because of the big screen size

iMac, 24-inch, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Part Number: Z0FH
3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB GDDR3
1TB Serial ATA Drive

should i be fine with this?

i bought my current MAC 6 months before they released the intel version and am slowly finding out the hard way i can't run certain programs or features like the latest AECS3 patch for editing mxf files, premire cs3, etc and who knows what else that will be released that i won't be able to use thanks to apple.

My suggestion, is to get a Mac Pro -- potentially used or refurbished. Apple has a refurbished Quad 2.66Ghz for $1999 in their refurbished store (http://store.apple.com/us_smb_78313/product/FA356LL/A)

Spend some extra cash on some more memory, and then if there's anything left over, consider a new monitor....

I waffled between the iMac and the Mac Pro last September when I purchased, and am so glad I went with the Pro. The ability to add much more memory, and more storage space (for scratch drive, backup, etc)....

Good luck!

if you have the extra money go with the macpro. Ive worked with both and the intel imacs work great with HVX200, FCP, after effects.

i'm on a macbookpro, 2.16ghz with 2 gig of ram. i mainly shoot 720pn and i've been very happy. home editing and i use a 23" cinema display, plus i have the laptop for in the field. just putting it out there, but maybe you don't want a laptop. anyway, great setup for me, and it's in your price range if you can find a used cinema display, which is what i did ($500).
