GH2 ADVICE-Camera Stolen- Should I buy the GH2 or wait for the next one

Hi Guys, my camera got stolen it was a Canon 7D, but I was thinking of buying a GH2. I use my Camera for music videos and shorts and stuff like that.
I need some advice, so I need a new camera and have the cash to buy it now. But I´ve been reading about Panasonic Probably releasing the upgrade for the GHseries. So I´m doubtful If I should jump ahead and buy a replacement for my camera or wait till they release the new version. What do you guys think? I read Phillip Blooms comparison between cameras and the fact that he recommended the Gh2 so Highly is why I want to buy it.

This is really your decision.
Most everyone on this GH2 forum will tell you to dive in and buy the GH2. It really depends how long you are wiilling to wait for the GH3. Also, will the GH3 produce better footage than the GH2. We assume it will, but no one knows.

I can tell you the GH2 with the current 3.62d hack produces jaw dropping quality footage. Cbrandin's 66Mb/s AQ2 settings for 1080 24P are excellent. Driftwood's 1080 24P 132Mb/s AQ2 3GOP settings are virtually identical for detail when comparing the uncompressed frame.

Yeah I have a 7D and a GH2- both are excellent cameras. Going from the 7D I'd say the big plusses are that the GH2 is much more user friendly for video shooting. Not too mention it's a lot easier to carry. The only downsides are you lose autofocus and exposure control through the camera when you put Canon lenses on your GH2- assuming you use a mechanical-only mount. But if you don't have a lof Canon glass this is not a big deal.

As far as waiting for the GH3- that's up to you. I'd have said this for sure on the GH1 as it was nothing special video wise but the GH2 is pretty much state of the art right now and I recommend it without hesitation. If you always wait for the ultimate piece of kit you're losing a lot of time.

Curious - any chance that Panasonic could release an update to the GH2 to allow AVCHD level 2.0 1080p 60 recording capabilities? Probably will be implemented in the GH3, but Sony will have a pretty good head start by then with the pending release of several new cameras. Any thoughts?

Anything's possible- Panasonic is one of the inventors of AVCHD so they definitely know about it. Remains to be seen whether they implement it on cameras like the GH or reserve for camcorders.

The thing is - the GH2 is right now, good enough to shoot with, whether it be music videos or shorts - heck, people shoot features with it. My philosophy for buying gear is: (a) does this do what I need it to do? and (b) do I need it right now? If you don't need it, because you don't have a project lined up, then I'd advise to wait. Always buy gear at the last minute - because project needs change, indeed projects get cancelled, and then there you are, stuck with some gear which you don't need at the moment while newer versions are coming out. That said, I don't think there is that much Panasonic is going to do to make the GH3 vastly preferable to the GH2. Because things that would be vastly preferable are already out - on the AF100. The GH3 may or may not get improvements (sometimes things go backwards!), but whatever improvements the GH3 gets will be minor enough to not make it worthwhile to waste time waiting. If you have a project, the GH2 is more than good enough to shoot with. So you need to answer the question for yourself: do you have an immediate need for a camera? If yes, then the GH2 is absolutely worth it.

If you have a project coming soon then yes. The GH2 is amazing and very versatile.
If you think you can wait, maybe have a look at the coming Sony cameras. I would love to be surprised with a nice contraption from the PS3 maker.

GH3, well it is not out and not even announced in the rumors so I wouldn't count on it.
