Adventures in P2

We hear a lot about P2 being used day to day, it's technical prowess and it's general industry proliferation but what about stuff that you couldn't have pulled off before P2?

I've started this thread to list any impressive stuff you've done.

Okay here's mine: Filming in Ukraine in March we were under pressure to produce an initial cut as soon as we got back to the UK. There wasn't a whole lot of time in the hotel (due to complex transfers etc) - so I thought is there any reason why I can't edit this on the plane? Nope, plenty of laptops out.

The flight was 2hrs long, just enough edit time and battery ... whipped out my Acer travelmate - insert P2 card - launch Edius. I made the edit on the card itself (instead of dumping it to HDD). Passed the laptop to the project manager who was sat across from me - he viewed it, made a couple of changes and then burned the DVD (actually 2 copies!) - all before touch down!

That's a great story!

One of my favorites is the back story on the History Channel mini-series about the Mexican American war. The made two copies of the footage while on location, and this meant that the Varicam stuff had to be loaded into the computer at the time along withthe file transfers from the two HVXs. The producer took one drive the editor took the other and when the editor completed the rough cut, he was able to send only the time line and the producer relinked the footage on his drive and was able to see the rough cut in full HD.

Best,

Jan

Quite a few people are doing same-day edits of weddings using P2 and Edius where they are able to show the pre-wedding preparations, the ceremony, first dance etc. during the reception / dinner.

That's just too much pressure I reckon.

I don't think they do a final edit, what I would do is have a quick cuts assembly of the key moments. Then put it into loop mode playback off the timeline.

That might be another way to rake in a little more cash on the wedding.

Best,
