I just sat there every day asking, "why do we use anything else?" The price and weight considerations go right out the window as soon as you turn those wheels.

Well those are significant reasons. Size is the main reason I don't get to use one all the time. The get you into all sorts of trouble when you're in a small space. And if you're low and having to do big pans that require a high degree of body distortion and arm extensions !

They also make it hard to do focus corrections if you're focus puller hasn't nailed it.

Still, there's nothing like the feel of a geared head. The way it stops is what I notice. A quick correction when someone stand from sitting. There's no double bounce.

How do you mean?

You got to take your hands off the wheels if you want to operate a zoom, tap the focus puller to wake up or change the focal point.

No biggie, it's just that it requires BOTH hands to operate, whereas a stick can be operated if you had to with one hand much more easily.

Nah, single speed. We just ran the main shaft through from one side to the other. Primary we usually put the 6" wheel on the the secondary gets the 4". Future designs may have two speeds, but trying to keep costs and weight as low as possible. We just started setting up one of our machine centers to hobb our own gear sets in house. All other manufacturing is in house on this head, so this would make it 100% in house. This change was mainly becauseI was not happy with the tolerance the off the shelf gear sets had. But it also opens up the possibility to offer different ratios when a customer orders. We can also sample different gear materials to see if we can lighten the unit up. The current gear sets are steel and weigh a ton. So I think its a win-win.

Hey Steve. It really looks great. Thanks for making a more affordable Gearhead. Any chance you will be at NAB this year so I can check it out in person. :-)

Thanks! The Gear head is my pet project here for a good 2+ years. Love to finally get the unit in the hands of shooters. The feedback and the recomendations to improve the unit are amazing.
Unfortunatly we will not be at NAB this year, but did start plans for next year. So we will be there is 2013. We always wanted our full inventory of products on the shelf before we hit NAB. The last item is the slider/dolly units. Currently at the shop running three new molds in support of the slider and dolly systems.
