Adorama rep: "we receive 7D on October 1st."

Great news that the first units could ship as early as next week -
To be clear, I didn't cancel my preorder with Adorama because I questioned their ability to deliver, but because our local camera shop was offering the 7D with the new Canon 18-135 lens as a kit, as opposed to the 28-135 I've seen pretty much everywhere else.

Once I had that preorder locked in, I didn't see a need to keep the ones I had with the 28-135 kit lens.
Of course, given that the 18-135 is a new lens, I expect it will take me longer to get my camera that if I'd stuck with the original order.

So the claimed October 1 release date makes sense now, given that Canon's shipping cameras to retailers on September 28.

I just called Adorama and was told they will be getting them "by the end of December"! And that they definitely have more pre-orders that they will first receive.

Thanks Helen for posting here.

See note from Boz, above....

One thing I would like to say about all of these "I've got 90 pre-orders and I'll cancel the 89 that don't ship first" posts...a lot of these places, especially the smaller shops, rely on pre-order information to figure out how many cameras to order. If you don't intend on taking delivery of a camera it is kind of crappy of you to place the order. The good thing is that I expect the 7D to have a very short shelf life early on so there will probably be somebody to pick up your canceled camera order in fairly short time.

But in general, it is just kind of rude to essentially ask a retailer to order you something you may or may not want.

I added onto my order today from Adorama - 3x 8GB Sandisk Extreme IV. After rebate, only $100! Until Sept. 26th.

Agreed - and noted.
As someone who had 3 preorders...I feel the need to explain now.
I placed one with one very large company and wasn't really pleased with their customer service, so I placed a second with another very large company (intending to cancel the first).

Then I was told that a local shop here was taking preorders with a different kit lens that I preferred - so I canceled both of those preorders, and placed my third (and final) order.

My point is - not everyone hoards preorders, and sometimes there are reasons for cancelling them.

But your point is definitely well taken.

So, imagine that multiplied by a gazzilion customers who are dying to get their hands on a hot new piece of kit, and you can see why giving out any figures regarding numbers of back-orders that actually correlates to reality, is tricky - it isn't that the retailers are being obstructive!!

Totally understandable, Helen.
I don't think anyone was saying retailers were being obstructive.
(at least I wasn't intenting to)

Just in case there was some misunderstanding here - I should mention that my customer service mention about one company had absolutely zero connection to my much earlier mention of Adorama being unable to give me an idea of where I was in their preorder queue. Two totally different scenarios.

what day did you order? Did you order body only or kit? I wonder if this info applies to both?

Rats. Ordered on the 14th. Does that mean I'm SOL for the next two weeks?

I really do wish I could give you some indication, but I don't know when the next shipment from Canon is scheduled.

I am proud to say that I did not preorder from anyone else than Adorama, if they come through they are going to be my preference over B&H, B&H annoys me with their constant pop up messages that they are on holiday etc. etc.
