Adobe CS5

I run FCS and edit exclusively on Final Cut and grade in Color.

I did get CS5 however, as the price of AE and PS as stand alone is almost the same anyway.

PS CS5, dont see much difference. But AE CS5 is the first version Ive used in years. I now regret not having used it more. AE CS5 is great. In two months I can do 10 times more than I could ever do in motion and much faster. Worth the money, the time and the effort.

I can fully vouch for Premiere CS5. It is a god send. Amazing. Granted I have a nice computer to work on, but I've never played back AVCHD files as smoothly in FCP or Vegas. It's truly a beautiful thing.

I also liked CS3 after it's updates. CS4 was a complete mess for me though. Just about every minute using it was like pulling teeth. So many glitches and stops, and felt so bloated.

Yep.. The only other NLE I've seen that can play AVCHD back as smoothly is Edius. CS5 with the suite can do much more than Edius alone so I use CS5 most of the time.

But, if you just need to edit quickly and have full RT playback of AVCHD files, Edius can't be beat.

Edius 5 is great for 24p n hacked GH1 footage but there is something weird about the color that is not as good.

I hear the next update of vegas will have a similar AVCHD turbo boost type of thing... but that is just a rumor as of now.

CS5 will work on a laptop, but if you want to use it to edit h.264/AVCHD footage, you'd be best served to choose a laptop that has an nVidia CUDA graphics card. I'm running it on a Lenovo W510 with an nVidia Quadro FX 880M graphics card and it fairly screams through h.264 footage (note I had to use the CS5 graphics card hack to get it to recognize the FX880M).

im thinking of getting this same machine.
how do you find the wide gamut rgb screen?
did you manage to calibrate it to look *normal*?
ive read many posts and complaints about people not being able to properly calibrate it even after months of ownership and trying multiple cal devices

I've made the switch from FCP to Adobe CS5 Suite as well. FCP seems stagnant, while CS5 has made improvements in powerful ways. CS5 is as good on a Mac as it is on a PC now as well. I was concerned with it not being as friendly as FCP, but I find it a much more powerful editing suite in conjunction with After Effects

Wasn't available when I ordered. I ended up with the 1600x900 normal screen, which is no big deal because I connect it to my desktop monitor. Would much rather have had the better screen but it wasn't available.

My answer isn't relevant because I don't have that screen, but I will say that my screen was out of calibration and I had to run the Windows calibration tool to get it to look halfway decent.

do you know if a wide gamut rgb screen is preferable for video editing?
or is that a feature mostly for image editing and printing?

i keep finding posts about people not being able to get their w510 fhd screens calibrated to a proper color palette even with pro calibration tools (some think that it is because led-rgb technology is new) and that it is a ongoing issue with said fhd screen.

im also thinking that: since the videos that i want to produce will be viewed by the far majority on regular (60-70% gamut) screens; isnt this also the sort of screen that i should monitor on?
otherwise i will make color adjustments based on a untypical screen; then everything will be off when viewing on a typical one
