KJ16ex7.7BIRSD vs XA17x7.6BERM

Hey everyone,

I'm considering getting an HPX-500 and I'm torn on my lens choice.

Given my budget, i'm looking at purchasing either the Canon lens or the Fujinon stock lens w/ 2x. I am partial to canon given my past experiences with them (and the fact that I own L lenses)

just a quick poll....which would you chose and why?

In the 2X range the lenses are very similar. If you were looking ant the I would say the the Fuji has an edge, but the 2X versions are very close. They are priced the same, chose which you like.

Best,

If everything else is about equal, make sure the Canon has all the features of the Fuji. Quickzoom is awesome. Memory zoom is great for hitting the mark on faster zooms. I've used the "auto zoom" a few times too.

what is the quickzoom function and also what is memory zoom?

right now I can get the Canon lens for $7980 before a $300 rebate, and the Fuji lens for $8260 before a $250 rebate.

So I am slightly leaning towards the canon, however I'm not sold just yet

For what it's worth, I've always had Canon lenses in 16mm, super16 and video.. so when I ordered my 500 I wanted a Canon - but the lenses were backordered with no ETA, so I took the Fujinon (w/o 2x) because I had a project I had to start...

I haven't used the Canon, but I will say that the Fuji is one of the nicest feeling lenses I've ever owned... I do almost everything manually from old habits, and the zoom and focus feel very positive and "silky"... I'm glad I was "forced" to change brands.

I obviously can't compare them optically, but the Fuji is a great lens for the price...

Funny thing, but worth mentioning, the Fujinon was cheaper than the Canon at first - now it's more expensive - that might tell you something too...

Quickzoom: you ALWAYS need to check (& doublecheck) focus, esp. in HD. so there's an extra button on the Fuji handle... push it, and it snaps all the way in (at top speed, regardless of where zoom speed dial is set) & stays there while you hold it down... you grab focus, release, and it snaps back out to where zoom was before pushing it.

Memory zoom: zoom in to desired focal length, set zoom memory button, zoom out to 1st position. when you need that preset zoom position, push memory button & it zooms in to set posit, at whatever speed is set on speed dial.

You can also set max/min servo zoom positions.

You can start a zoom (any speed), push a button, & lens takes over zoom at that speed until all the way in or you push the servo rocker to change speed. (Nice for ultra-slow creeps where you might "fall off" the slowest speed otherwise.)

PS - none of this is applicable to you people who drool over prime lenses. Go polish yer FF wheels. ;)

It seems the vote is for the Fujinon lens then? Because I'm about to make a purchase, and I want to make sure I get the best bang for the buck.

Any thoughts on the wide angle converters/attachements? Would I loose CAC functionality if I add some glass to a CAC? Canon seems to make lower cost WA, Could I use a Canon WA on a Fujinon lens?

Spoke with Jonathan up at Able, the canon lens has the quick zoom and memory zoom functions. They had one on display up there which i got to play with. the image was wonderful. One note they had is that the Fuji lens is bigger and beefy-er So don;t know if that will factor into your decision.

Currently Panasonic has a $300 rebate on the canon lens and $250 on the Fuji. So i can get the canon lens for about $7700 vs $8000 for the fuji after rebates.

Sorry for jumping into this thread late. I too am now faced with making a lens choice from among these listed on the HPX500 brochure:

KJ10ex4.5B IRSD PS12
KJ16ex7.7B IRSD PS12
KJ21ex7.6B IRSD PS12
KJ16ex7.7B KRSD PS12
CANON 2/3" LENS
XA17x7.6BERM-M58B
XA17x7.6BRM-M58B
FIJINON 2/3" LENS

My question is: do all these lenses have the CAC circuitry inside? I'm looking at B&H "kits" and considering the Fujinon XA17x7.6BRM-M58B. Does it have CA correction? Also, some of the Canon lenses have a servo iris, vs the manual iris on the Fuji's. Is that an importan consideration? After two years of bliss with the HVX200, I need more depth of field....and my employer needs a couple of live event cameras so the HPX500 looks like the best thing!

My first shoulder-mount and 2/3" camera...still learning :)

Thanks!
John

Nothing against B&H, I buy stuff from them often - but when I buy a camera I stick with companies that have a reputation for direct person-to-person customer service (and a solid history in the professional motion picture equipment business)..

And there are many good ones to chose from - my experiences have been with Cristine at ZGC and Jerrod at Able Cine (in LA) but I see others regularly represented on this site as well... Expect straight informative answers to complex questions...

Oh, and another consideration - the lenses with the 2x extenders are bigger and bulkier by nature... You should decide if you really need the extra length because if you hand hold often (I do), the added weight will alter the balance of the camera...

And with that long lens, you will need a good, probably $5,000+, tripod. The lens that I use, the Fuji w/o the 2x, pushes the envelope of my (admittedly older) O'Conner 50 - so it's not just lens expense that needs consideration, it's the support as well...
