AC160 Adjusting the shutter speed - synchro scan

Hello, I would really like to use degrees instead of seconds for the shutter, but I am not having any luck using the instructions on page 38 of volume 2 in the Operating Instructions. Have any of you gotten this feature to work?
 
its a great feature using it to shoot 25p in a 60hz country
its under the same page you set the detail level. look again!
 
I too have trouble with page 38.

Seems to me shutter speed does not have to be mixed up with VFR, so why do they list shutter speeds on the bottom of page 39 under VFR=OFF

Is it true that as per page 39 of the manual, you cannot actually set shutter under, say, 1080/24p, to 1/48? Looks like you have to use 1/60.

What then does the entry in the table " Normal (OFF) 1/50" mean? What is it that is OFF (if you look at the table the top part seems to refer to VFR=ON whereas the bottom part shows VFR=OFF)

And what is the purpose actually of Synchro Scan?

The manual seems to be saying on page 83 that Synchro Scan "Adjusts the synchro scan shutter speed used for shooting images on a TV screen, etc." Does this mean forget about Synchro Scan unless you are filming a program that is on TV or do they mean filming something that is going to be broadcast by a TV station?

There are certain fixed shutter speeds, such as 1/24, 1/30, 1/60, 1/120, 1/250, 1/500 and 1/1000. You will notice that 1/48 is not among them. So if you're cycling through the shutter speeds, you won't find 1/48 listed.

If you turn the shutter off (not the VFR mode, but the shutter) when in 24p or 30p, you will get a default shutter speed of 1/50.

Syncro Scan lets you set a shutter speed of pretty much anything you want, in any fraction, from 1/24.1 to 1/250.0. So you can use Syncro Scan to dial in 1/48.0 if that's what you want. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with filming television screens, although that is one usage of when you'd need to go into the syncro scan to dial in a custom shutter speed.
 
Thank you ... that solves a number of mysteries. Extremely helpful.

I will now, as an experiment, go to Menu\Scene File\Synchro Scan, set the dial to 1/48, then see if I can see 1/48 on the LCD at position #36 on page 75. That should provide proof that I did the right things under Menu\ . . .

Footnote: I can turn off the shutter, set the Synchro Scan to 1/48 but then I no longer see shutter speed in the LCD

That's because you can't turn the shutter off and expect syncro scan to work; syncro scan is a shutter speed. You have to turn the shutter on, then select the syncro scan speed (choose the slowest shutter speed, then go one slower and it'll be the syncro scan speed).
