Hey guys this has been crazy I just bought a lotta bandwidth so we'll see if you can't use it all=D This clip is designed to fully test this actors capabilities as well as mine with lighting and editing. I lost some color in rendering so heres what it looks like on my monitor

Here's a pic of the set. I lit with one omni and one lowel pro for hair. both daylight corrected.

It looked nice, but I do have a few thoughts.

1) the "letter box mask" needs to be pure black. Always. In your clip it's more of a gray (screenshot if you want it) which makes it stand out from the black background of my media player; it's very distracting.

Also, any reason for the horizontal black space on the sides of the video?

its the way it rendered its the best quality for the smallest file size in vegas i found.
also did I mention I lost color in rendering? (see screenshot)

did you just refer to yourslef in the third person, .. or are you and the actor not the same person?

anyway. the bitrate is too high for me to watch on this dump machine here, but ill watch it later at the studio. so i cant comment on the acting, but as for the lighting .. in the words of randy jackson.. "it was just ok for me man." it looks a little flat and a bit underexposed. the scene just lacks conrast. perhaps just too strong of fill on the subject? ..he could also really use some stronger backlighting to really separate him from the background, as the overall tone of the scene is somewhat muted. i like the choice of backgrounds though. for some reason the white balance seems off as well. the scene looks really warm in the skin tones.. maybe thats just me or this monitor though. anyway.. its alot better than alot of the stuff we see here from peeps stating out. ..try to bring up the levels a bit, and not be afraid to work with a little stronger lighting and let the camera push its limits a little more with the highlights sopmewhere on the subject. as it is the bright window spot on the wall behind him is distracting as the subject doesnt have that level of contrast or dynamics anywhere on him anyway. sorry if im rough. ...im rougher .. and the roughest on myself. i pick apart my own stuff to peices the second after i finish it.. BUT, thats how i get better. the second that i think my stuff has nothing to gain.. i realize that its really only me that has no potential to grow. its important to stay looking for fault, and continually thinking about gettig better. just trying to help is all.

..this is just one of those things that i see and think its good, but with some adjustments could be great.

man no way! I apperciate the comments any time a platinum or diamond member comment on my work I consider it an achievment because I know you wouldnt take the time to do it if you didn't see potential. well that's my theory anyways;P I could see how the colors would look a little over saturated on a standard monitor I am working on a design monitor which is very good with colors. I'm going to go look on my other comp to see what it looks like now. How did we like the acting?

Virum

It appears your monitor is not calibrated properly; the bars are black for me and I'm pretty sure I locked on.

Not a bad screen test avatuar; your lighting is well done done; subjectively could have used an additonal splash using a cookie on the back wall (subjective). As Neil mentioned, it is somewhat flat but that does not mean it is not good. It is indeed better than most here. I think a cukoloris (I just like saying cukoloris but don't know if I am spelling it right) would add depth to the background.

Your talent appears to have some but it is hard to judge on a solo rant. If that is you; there is no need to be shy baby! Just say "Hey, It's me!"

Anyway, keep it coming!

Now that I look at the grab; Neil is exactly right. Again, the lighting does look good; mainly due to most people not using any lighting; but it appears to be a lightsource for lightsource sake. I would attempt to have the light appear to be coming from the LEFT (Screen) more and with less emphasis on the right side. Try and create a little more contrast. I'd also consider softning up the source. It does look Sharp as if Track Lights are above him.

hmmmm i'm startn to see what ur sayn, it kinda looks more sitcomish like that huh? ooooh I just looked at it on my other monitor that looks horrible! Like a pumpkin mixed with a tomato.

Exactly

Again, not bad at all; most people don't even use a cheap brooder (cough cough it's all I can afford right now) but....

Try lighting it from where the light source would come from. Think about "Where is this light coming from?" Is it a table lamp? Is it another window? Given the shot you submitted, it is hard for us to know where the light is coming from but if you showed an EST Shot of a table lamp in the frame then you would have some motivation.

The back light is nice as we can see the window but I would aim to make the edge even harder. Try experimenting perhaps with the use of light in a DARK and LIGHT relationship. I'm curious to see more of this and what you can do!

Totally agree with JH - light him from the left ( that what the viewer expects from the window in your shot)

Balance the colour of the light to the window ( or vice versa)

..yeah, its certainly not bad. johns got some goods there for sweetening it up. i personally cant even think anymore. but what would likely really help, is having someone else to stand in the scene so you could adjust lighting on a similar subject with realtime review and changes.

I think it's marvelous, and you lost not only color, but a lot of contrast (in fact, that's why you lost color). Judging from the frame you posted, and not from the motion video, it's top notch, and everything beyound that is a matter of personal taste. Lighting is aesthetically pleasing, fits the genre and helps telling the story. Nice!

PS: I'm aggainst changing the angle of the keylight in this. I'd stick to your choice.

whats the best rendering format for the smallest size without losing color in vegas have you guys found?

Well, unfortunately, the video only played at about 1 frame per second for me (if that), so I can't judge the acting, but the picture looked pretty good. Looks a lot like film to me (based on slideshow anyway).

..or at least the same person thats in your avatar, but i havent veiwed it yet.. too high bitrate for this machine. ill let you know tommorow

Whenever I try to play the clip my computer screen goes black and plays the sound. Then when I Alt-Tab out of it windows says my display driver has failed and I get the nasty 16bit colors and a really low resolution. So I have to restart.

Woe is me, and here I wanted to be in the club so bad :)

Do you got another version I could see?
