Acrylic Skater dolly

I'm relatively new to this forum but I thought I would share a few pics of the skater that I finished yesterday. Materials are 3/8" and 3/16" black acrylic, 1/4" and 1/16" clear acrylic and 3/4" black UHMW poly.

I really like working with acrylic because it is incredibly strong but can be cut and shapped with woodworking tools. It also glues with a very thin cement that soaks into joints and welds them. Pieces to be glued can be aligned and clamped before gluing.

The geometry is the same as the commercial version made by PS Technic. The rocker that supports the camera is even similar though I chose not to cut through the base to make it as low as theirs. If I ever need it that low I will take the rocker off.

Holy Cow... you get the prize man... definitely my personal favorite rendition! Congratulations!

Looks fantastic.. clearly a sharp, finished version... Im sure it works flawlessly.

What would you say you spent in cash and time?

Thanks,
J

I haven't had time to find something worthy to shoot but I will post some footage when I do. It is very smooth.

Time and materials? About a week but a lot of that was trying to figure out the best way to do something. I have $210 in materials but some of that crosses over with another project. For example, some of the plastic that I used to build a jib I purchased at the same time as the skater materials. There were also a few items that did not get included in the parts for the skater because I bought them for another project. Overall I think it balances out. I have a full shop so I did not spend on tools with the exception of buffing wheels to polish the plastic where cuts had been made.

If I had to list the major tools that are really required to do this the list would include:
Router - capable of handling bits with 1/2" shank
Band Saw
Drill press
Belt sander - could be a hand held clamped to a bench
buffing wheels on arbor
Various drill bits, files, taps, and router bits

It may take a while to put it together but I could post the CAD drawings and some basic instructions if folks are interested.

WooooooooW!!!

Looks fantastic! The drawings are always welcome!
Very interesting - how did you realize the rocker? Any bigger pictures of that?

Rocker

Rocker

My first try at the rocker was a failure. Fortunately I had screwed it on so it could be removed. This one works very well.

It's very hard to photograph this black acrylic (like a black mirror) so I will post the CAD drawings soon to give you a better idea of how it works.

Nice work!!

I'd love to see the actual CAD drawings!

I've been looking into using lexan as an alternate to plate aluminum (my first choice) just because of machining costs - locally anyway.

nice Skater

nice Skater

Yeah I would be interested in the plans. I like the acrylic look also. So far theb est I have seen.

Quick question. Anyone can link me to where to find the skater wheels? I made a 3' x 3' lazy susan and used bearing for it, but it is way to loud. I need some inline skates wheels to make it smooth and more quiet.

thanks

edswheels.com is one of thousands. Google "inline skate wheels"

2 Question:

After getting the inlione skate wheels, how do I put them in place? Any threads on the mechnics of attaching them to wood?

Also, where to get the Jesus buddy action figure? I like it!

I will not make them for sale

I will not make them for sale

Thanks for the interest but that would be in violation of the patent. I will also not sell the instructions or drawings... I think that would also be patent infringement. I will, however, post the instructions and drawings on this site and others for anyone who cares to build one themselves.

I hope to have them up by the end of the day.
