Im was lookin at satchler for tripod, and i know with p2 and battery its like 5lbs for hpx.
and the cheapest tripod satchler has is $800 that supports 4.4lbs, next one is like the one i linked for $800 would that be good enough ? smooth and everything? for 7d and hpx.

I think the ntg3 has a wind sock, ill check.
are boom poles alot? it would be last thing id get.
and main thing i want to get for hpx is a FireStore 60GB drive so that i can mount it on back
of my handle on hpx and off p2 data of both my 16gb p2 cards.

possibly a nice red rock mico 35mm adapter, and some nice nikon lens.
that would be nice

anything else?
what kinda light / filters / head phones would you recommend?

THanks alot!

For wind protection you will want something much better than the little foam socks if you are working outside. Check out the Rode blimp for one example. This includes a suspension kit which you will need to mount the mic on anything.

Boompole prices vary a lot. A very basic pole is about $150. How were you going to hold your mic without one? See comment above regarding suspension.

You don't need a firestore, that is used for recording. All you need is a non-cam powered hard drive. The cam can host the drive and you can dump your P2 directly.

Sony 7506 headphones are favored by many.

UV and circular polarizer filters to start. Don't scrimp on this, Heliopan or Schneider are both excellent.

IMHO I would get more experience before investing in a 35MM adapter. A lighting kit and more audio gear would certainly come first.

well, yeah i saw the windsock that Rode has it looks really nice its $60!! lol but ill get the ntg3 that comes with it, so i can just buy an small external 200Gb drive and use it directly to my hpx170 with no pc!?!! thats awesome! those head phones look so nice and their only $90.

that a decent light setup?
and ill wireless mics + my rode ntg 3 setup, not sure what else i can do here to excel my
audio quality.

thanks

any other advice/accessories that are a must please let me know!

bump,

list in order of what to get first.

2 batterys
pelican 1550 hardcase
1.5TB external for p2 footage.
opteka .4x or 16x9 fisheye
sachtler FSB4 Tripod $800
Rode NTG3 Rycote Sock/Boom Poll $900
72mm Filter's
Ty 2 Bag
sony headphones
Led Light
Wireless mic system
Light setup
Matte Box + cinevate Rails
M2 35mm adapter

what am i missing

forget the 35mm thing. for three reasons:
1. they can be a lot of hassle to use on set and not intuitive to use unless you have a decent existing grasp of 35mm photography.
2. you need a LOT more than just adapter and lenses. a turnkey very basic kit wont come in for under about $4000
3. with the DSLR evolution. i predict that the 35mm adapter for video market will reasonably soon start to fall out of fashion and likely support.

let me clarify what ggrantly mentioned about hard drives. YES you can dump the contents of your P2 cards directly to a hard drive, but you CANNOT shoot to the hard drive. the problem with dumping directly to a drive is that your camera is out of commission while the transfer takes place. depending on the size of your card that could be 5 min to nearly an hour. and that wouldnt fly on any job ive been on.

the simplest thing to do is to get a pair of say 16gig cards and a cheap laptop with pcmcia slot. that way you can shoot to one card and shoot to the second card while the first one transfers.

and no $60 windscreen is going to cut it - even in the mildest breeze. search "rycote softie" thats what you need.

that sachtler is a nice tripod. but for the same money an older higher-end bogen/manfrotto would be smarter for you. i picked up a 510 head on 3193 legs for about $800 and its superb. holds my camera, 35mm rig and even my kessler crane without missing a beat.

generally, its typical for a tripod to be able to carry 2x-3x what their specs say.

and a 1.5tb drive is way overkill for field transfer. i wouldnt go bigger than say 500-750gb and probably more toward 250gb.

dont know why i didnt think of this before but if i got a 7d like i am planning on doing after the hpx, that would take away the reason to get a 35mm film adapter anyways.

the hpx package im getting comes with 1 16 gb card, but i will buy atleast 2-3 more when i get the money.

as for the mic, it says the rycote softie is $60 on B&H and its on this package too.

could you link me the tripod head and legs i cant find them, the hard drive is going to
be for everything. i need to upgrade 4gb of ram and get atleast a 500-1tb external
for my movies, music, pictures and media + p2 storage.

well i'll be dog bit! i didnt know you could get them that cheap. cool!

the 510/3193 is an older model. you'll have to look on forums like this or ebay/craigslist to find them. but they come up pretty regularly.

the new equivalent is the 526 head and 525 legs

2 batterie's are they really $170 each!?
pelican 1550 case
72mm filters
ty2bag
opteka fisheye
sachtler tripod
rode ntg3 mic
leg light - what would be good for hpx170?
Rails / Mattebox - any other recommendations besides the $2000 one on b&h?
250gb external for p2 footage / laptop
head phones sony 7506
Wireless mic setup - ?
Tung. Light Setup - ?

any last suggestions?
that looks about right.

Lindquist,

The softie in that kit will work pretty well in light conditions, but this is will do much better in any breeze.

A shotgun is most often used outdoors. For indoors a small hyper diaphragm mic would compliment your shotgun. A rode NT3 is a good place to start.

There are a bunch of great stickies in the Audio Section, take a look.

I am not Barry Green (8-) but I would recommend his HPX book. It is worth the price of admission and will give you great info about the use of the HPX.

i also saw a post a while back where there was baseplate for hvx/hmc/hpx
baseplate for what uses? there are several types of baseplates... are we talking baseplate for attaching rods and accessories or baseplate to strengthen the bottom of the camera?

would i tell the difference between the legs and head you recommended and
the satchler ?
probably not and definitely not unless you had them side by side and knew what you were looking for. sachtler (thats CHT not TCH) is a VERY GOOD brand. and generally considered better than bogen/manfrotto. BUT the model you are looking at is the second cheapest model of their cheapest line. its like the 318 model bmw. its the one you get because its the only one you can afford. and the way ive always gone about things is id rather have a top end nissan than a bottom of the line bmw.

your mic choice has a lot to do with what kind of work you do. i do tv commercials, live music and industrials and my mics consist of:

sennheiser mkh416 shotgun
2 sennheiser evolution wireless with countryman B3 lavs (replacing the stock senheiser lavs)
sony ecm77 WIRED lav (in case im in a place that has wireless issues)
shure vp88 stereo condenser. this mic has a VERY high SPL for use in loud rock shows (to eliminate clipping)

in the sound world, this is considered a pretty basic kit. and i usually just use it for more budget strapped or guerilla work. typically if my clients budget allows, i'll hire in a dedicated sound guy.

another thing to consider is going with fluorescent lights instead of tungsten. that seems to be the trend lately. not that tungstens dont have their place. but fluorescent is WAY cooler (cooler as in lack of HEAT!) - which makes for a happier set.

a 3 piece kinoflo set (2 diva 400, 1 diva200) would rock! but youre looking at $4000 or more for that.
i found a cheap britek set that (with 3rd party diffusers, tungsten gels and carrying tube) cost about $900. its not nearly as good or easy to use as a kino kit. but for my clients who cant afford rental on the kinos. its fits the bill.

Flo lights are great, really great, but they are always soft. If you buy tungsten, you can go hard and soften them with diffusion when you want to. So from that perspective, tungsten is more versitile for a beginning kit. Cheaper too, watt for watt, but you need more power to run them. Having said that, I would love to have a nice set of kinos or coolites.

the softie rycote that comes wit the mic will do just fine, an im pretty sure i get the
hpx book/dvd when i buy the hpx from him.

I saw a baseplate on here a while back , i think it was spec common. its for protecting
bottom of hpx/hmc/hvx. cant find them anymore.:(
as for the tripod, im not looking to spend $30,000 on a tripod, just need somthin
that will work with a 7d and hpx with smooth pans, i dont have any job and will not have
any job including this type of work untill i move back to maui... still $800 for a tripod is alot..

thanks for the audio advice, but thats way outta my league till i atleast my my hpx for 6-12 months..

I meant a led light for hot shoe on my camera, the bescor one looks nice.
and batteries from b&h are$170! where can i get cheaper ones on ebay?
