AC90 Porn - Photos from Panasonic

Nice Lance

Looking at the sie view of the camera and the LCD mounting I reckon that the Varavon Loupe that's made specially for the Lumix GH series cameras would slip over that LCD almost perfectly and all one would need to do is have a thread under the XLR section of the handle and voila, you have, with the addition of some simple rails under the camera and a pad, a pretty neat shoulder mount unit. Hard to say without dimensions but the layout looks very promising. I had loupes on my 130's and they worked very well too!!!

I think Pansonic are using some of the same images on their Preliminary Brochure which is also available.

Watching Bob's video I think that the clear cover over the audio controls also flips left or right so you can latch it to keep the buttons on the left of the audio section covered or the audio section covered and it looked like it even latches or clips on both sides...that's very neat!!!

Chris

The audio door does flip out of the way, yes.

As for the LCD, I'd bet a nickel that it's the same one as on the forthcoming GH3, as I think the specs are the same for pixel count and size, but I don't remember for sure, but it seems reasonable. Dimensions are 3 7/8" x 2 3/8" for the physical outside housing of the LCD, if that helps you determine whether a GH3 loupe would fit. The GH2 screen is a lot smaller, so something made for a GH1/GH2 definitely won't fit on the AC90.

The only real con I've found to it is, it's harder to strip it down to a tiny size for putting in a smaller bag. It doesn't affect being able to put filters on.

A wide-angle adapter on an AC90? That should make it crazy wide. The AC90 is already as wide as a DVX100 with a wide-angle adapter, so ... an adapter on top of the already wide lens, should be hyper-wide. A 0.8x should make it equiv. to a full-frame 24mm, a 0.7x should make it about on par with a ff 20mm...

Is there some chance there are positive stops on the focus ring, or real linkage to the lens.....just dreaming

Just noticed in the photos there is a port named av-multi; what is that? If it is component, it is a different plug than used previously.

It works like all the Panasonic focus rings since the dvx100: no stops, but precise movement as repeatable as if it was a mechanical linkage.

It provides for either component or composite output. The cable has r/g/b component, yellow composite, and red/white audio connectors.

Glad component is still with us.

Barry, compared to a hmc40, how much better is this cam in low light? If the hmc40 was around asa50, how would you compare the ac90?

Grant

I think the secret lies in the backlit sensors!! Guys using the Sony CX700 (which also has backlit chips) report that the lowlight is excellent and way better than the biiger sensor cams without backlit sensors.. I think Barry already mentioned that the 90's sensitivity is not that much different in ISO terms from the 40 BUT, the huge difference is that on the 90 he found that even 24db gain was usable and we all know what 24db looks like on the HMC cameras!! It appears that you can push the gain far more with the chips and still get a clean image so although sensitivity remains much the same the low light capabilities are far better

Chris

Agreed. Sensitivity is about the same, maybe even 1/4 stop less, but the extremely improved gain means you can push it at least one stop and maybe two stops further and still have better looking images than the hmc40 in the same scenario.

Looks like the HDMI connector is full size? Barry did you mention clean 4:2:2 out of the HDMI? I wonder how much image control it has, as in cine gamma/Matrix type tweaks? Sweet little camera and the price is mighty nice.

I still like to throw on a 35mm dof adapter from time to time. I have always liked the look of the softer image. I suppose one could still attach one to the front with the lens hood.

I'm curious as to why pani would put the red ring around the lens like Canon "L" series lenses. From a distance people will assume it's a canon cam, I know I would. Not that it matters, but when there's such stiff competition, one would think Pani would want to differenciate themselves from the rest of the pack. I don't know, maybe I'm being rediculous to think this way. It wouldn't be the first time.
