ALL: Ac130a, the tale of a newb...or how to bang your head against the wall

Thought some of you might find this amusing. Trying to buy a camera turned into a true trial of perseverance.
This was over a month more or less. I ended up with the 130a.

Always into videos, but always used the cheap consumer models. Finally decided to buckle down and buy the best I could afford. This is my story.

Looking to spend not much over 2000 dollars I found there were no pro models in that range, so I slowly upped the ante. I finally stopped near 3,000 dollars when I found the HMC150. After reading dvxusers forums I got the sense it was a great camera.
Since I always use amazon, thought I would buy it there. Only one seller selling it, so I bought it. It came, brand new, awesome. While in transit I went and bought lots of accessories including the hmc150 hard case.

Trying to register my hmc150 ran into a snag. "equipment does not match delivery result" was the error on their site. Quite a vague error message. After 30 minutes on the phone going from one panasonic rep to another one guy came on and explained gray market items to me.

I was freaked out. Very upset. I got screwed. Luckily I bought through amazon and the seller was 20 minutes away. After raising a stink with both, the seller agreed to a full refund. Whew.
I drove down to his warehouse to drop it off as a return. His warehouse is in a very bad part of town. When I got there I found his warehouse to be a simple set of small 1 car garage style warehousing units. There were a lot of 'workers' walking around loading and unloading tons of giant tvs and other electronics.
If you ever saw goodfellas, this would be 'jimmy's warehouse' for sure.
I asked one worker if they worried about all this electronics in this neighborhood. He laughed and said 'everyone knows us here and no one is dumb enough to try'... yikes.
Well, I got the refund and gave them the unit back.

I bought a battery from adorama camera at this time, from amazon. They sell it as a 5800. It is a lie. It was a 5400 gray market. Should have read the reviews. Very upset about this gray market junk now...livid.

Got home and immediately started working on getting a legit hmc150. I went to panasonics site to find an authorized dealer. I could only put in a zip code and it would only show dealers within 12 miles or so.. I inputted various zipcodes for the southeast florida area and got a list of 15 dealers.

Out of 15 dealers, only 3 had websites that worked. The rest came up as website not existing. 2 of them were event planners and one actually had items for sale (no prices though).
I sent emails to all 15, most came back as undeliverable except for the one that had items for sale, he responded in minutes. No one else did.
So I called all 15. 12 were either dead numbers or new businesses had taken over the number and the dealer was gone.
I called panasonic and they assured me all 15 were dealers and I must be mistaken...groan. I asked about other online sites, how would I know if they are authorized. They said to check the panasonic website by putting in my zip code. <facepalm> Eventually she said the only way was to find an online dealer, put in their zipcode and see..or just manually call panasonic ot verify.

Was getting really teed off now, this was getting stupid.

They say 'try it before you buy it'.... Well, there was only one authorized dealer within a few hours range of me so I asked about trying them out. He had none for trial. He had one boxed hmc150 and would have to order a 130a or 160a which I was now considering.

so, impossible to try.. Worse, I was thinking of the ac130a. But would it fit in my 200 dollar hard case I bought for the hmc150? Decisions.

I called bhphoto's website and asked if they were a dealer, and confirmed with panasonic. The guy on the phone said he could do better than the website prices and asked if he could send me a quote for the hmc150 and one for the 130a. I said sure. He got my name and email...and phone number..and started asking me question after question like 'what editing software do you use', etc.. I said, 'look, just send me a quote so I can buy this thing please'.

two days later, no quote. Lots of reading on dvxuser forums though, and leaning to the 130a now.
So I call bhphoto and say what is up? The guy on the phone said he would send me a quote, said he saw it there and did not know why it was not sent.
But first he wanted my mailing address, my physical address, phone numbers, what I did for a living..etc. I told him, send me the quote or I will buy this elsewhere...he never did.

So, I ended up at the only local panasonic dealer in my area that actually sells ac130a's and hmc150s. I ordered the 130a.

Now I have the hmc150 hard case, will it fit? The other accessories will go with it (mic, etc). I bought the 85 dollar hmc150 book...great, will they exchange it for a 130a book??

Finally the ac130a arrived. First thing I noticed the ac130a book is there...thank god, not having to spend another 80 bucks.
First thing when I got home, right to panasonics site and registered..It was not a gray market!!!...whoo hoo.

Seocnd thing, lets see if it needs a firmware update. The firmware on my 130a is 2.05...panasonic's site? They have a link for '130 series cameras' and the only firmware is 1.11. Huh?

Called panasonic and asked why my firmware is 2.05. I also joined a facebook group about the ac130/160 and none of their versions are 2.05.. But all of theirs are higher than 1.11.
My call to panasonic resulted in lots of wait time as they kept passing the call higher. Finally they said they needed to do research to find out what is going on and what version is the latest for their 130a cameras.

holy moly.

The camera might be great, but panasonic has 90% of its dealers misrepresented on its site for my area, have no idea what version their newer cameras firmware is....holy moly.

banging my head....banging my head.

Now, what about the hard case for the hmc150, did the ac130a fit? Well, it did. I had to cut out a huge section by its back end since it was a little longer. I have to take off the viewfinder cover or the folding arm of the case mushes it when closing. I also have to take off the mic holder since it is basically on top of the camera and adds an inch or so. It is a very snug fit. The height is almost too much.
The ac130a came with a real battery, so had to make a bigger hole for that.
But it fits...so money not wasted. Just have to put viewfinder and mic extension on each time I take it out.

Ready to film now.

Guess this is what happens when you enter a new arena, you have to pay your dues. I gratefully learned about gray market items, authorized dealers, an inability to ever try before I buy, and how to bang my head while reading a pdf manual on the ac130a.

whoo hoo...

and I have to add....
I sent numerous inquiries to panasonic via their online forms. And my phone calls where they took my number to get back to me.
Over the last month, not one single return email or phone call. Not one.
Makes me scared about this thing ever breaking and needing help with it..lol

please prepare for cat videos soon.

Hi Bob,
A saga indeed! But you did the right thing by buying from an official reseller. I was going to import a 160A from BHphoto as it was significantly cheaper then here in NZ. But before I did, I checked with the Panasonic service agents and they advised that they did not support imports even from BH as they were considered grey. So any warranty claim would mean sending it back to USA.

So I purchased locally and , yep, needed to make a warranty claim for lens and servo assembly. Although they had to fly in the units from Japan which took a couple of weeks, when I sent them the cam on Monday, it was back by Thursday, rebuilt! What I would have saved would have been consumed in freight, phone calls, and time. So I guess the moral is support your local official reseller.

I'm glad it worked for you in the end, this camera is capable of superb professional output, and Barry Green's book is essential as the manual is left wanting. If you haven't got it, this must be the very next accessory you buy. Happy shooting!
Cheers!
Rod

well, a welcome surprise...barry greens book was in the ac130a box...so that was awesome. Probably because it was not grey market.

Grey market cameras are still made by Panasonic but they come from other overseas warehouses and not via local distributors ... My current HMC's are "grey" as they were imported from the Singapore warehouse not an East Coast distributor. Yes you still get the 3 years warranty and yes you can register on the PASS site too .... The actual error is simply a wrong destination ...I'm in Australia so I put "Australia" and it was rejected as the serial numbers didn't match the location ..they registered fine when I put the location as Singapore which matched the serial no prefix/suffix ... As Rod says, if it does go wrong then it needs to be shipped back to the warehouse which would be a pain!!

Hope you enjoy your 130 Bob, I had mine for 3 months but they really didn't suit me at all so I went back to the HMC's.

Chris

yea chris..that is what pana told me..however, the seller never said it was grey market...and sold it to me at full price. That is crooked as heck.
Would like an hmc150 too as a second camera...but don't have that kind of money. Not yet anyway.

I've placed numerous orders with B&H Photo for camera gear. On a couple of additional occasions, I have also bought a TV and a computer from them too. Never once have I received anything short of outstanding service. In fact, in many cases, they have shipped my order out the very same day that I placed it.

So I consequently find your story about B&H Photo extremely difficult to believe. Why were you asking for a special price? Are you a student, or work for a school? Or are you with the government and needed to use a Purchase Order?

Why do you find it hard to believe BnH didn't send the quote? Their service is usually very good, but I have read plenty of screw ups from them, their only human. As far as pricing goes, There's times prices drop before they update the site, i'm guessing this was the case.

Maranfilms: I have found their service to be exceptional, well above what I have experienced from other firms. So much so that I have bought from them many times now, never without receiving great service.

For example, Bob is now saying that this unnamed dealer that he bought his AC130a from did not tell him anything about the current Panasonic $300 rebate on the AC130a. Yet if you go to B&H's website, you will see that B&H is giving this rebate to customers as as an instant savings.

I also find it hard to believe that Adorama would misrepresent third party batteries and sell them as being Panasonic batteries. Sounds more like to me that he did not pay attention when placing his order. There is certainly no Panasonic battery listed on the Adorama website that is in any way misleading about what it is.

I also find it a bit odd that he names all of the companies that he said that he had problems dealing with, and yet fails to mention from whom he ended up buying his AC130a.

I guess that I am just a skeptic by nature, and a hard person to convince. Especially when things are said that are totally contrary to my own personal experience.

Clearly, any organization can have a "bad day" and no amount of screening can protect an organization from a support rep who is not aligned with company policy and procedure.

BUT, my experience with B&H is five-star on each and every transaction. I have been to their store twice and tied up their reps for what must have seemed to them to be hours, with no signs of them trying to get rid of me. Knowledgeable, courteous, helpful . . .

I would like to meet Bob - maybe he has a little black cloud over his head that follows him around, I hope not.

He certainly has had a rough introduction to pro video.

The Panasonic experience seems extraordinary.

Where I am, I was introduced to a local Panasonic distributor who seems mostly to sell to the two national TV networks here in Canada.

You would expect that they would not want to waste much of their time with a one-trick pony like me, but, they sold me the camera and then, on the way out, said if I want training, the general manager would be pleased to let me come in any Saturday morning for some one-on-one training with him.

I bought Barry's book and read it 20 - 30 times and ended up not needing any training, but they would have accommodated.

When I wanted to upgrade from my 160 to 160A the national Panasonic rep in Toronto and my local distributor took care of packing up, shipping, expediting and returning the camera within a few days.

I have also bought things from Adorama a few times. No indication at all, ever, that they would pull any stunts.

How about we all rewind and congratulate Bob on his purchase and invite him to post questions he may have..

. . . . .so long as I don't have to take him out on one of my shoots.

Too scary !

Sounds like a learning thing, if you have no one to ask and you might not be sure about the equipment then I can see all the above happening to anyone. I say always take your time when spending money and read the return fine print. So now comes the fun stuff using your new camera.

I just called them up and asked a question and said I was interested in the hmc150 or ac130...their prices are on the site..the guy on the phone said he would work me out some quotes and beat that price...and then all the questions and never sent a quote...truth.

got my camera now, having fun playing with it...and reading barry's book that came with it.
And much wiser about who to buy from and to be aware of gray market items. Not all gray market items are bad, but misrepresented items I am on the look out for. Cannot trust those sellers.

Again, I was going to buy from bh, but they wanted to send me a quote...but all they did was grill me about my editing software, purpose for camera, etc....and never sent a quote..so I bought from a local dealer. Do not read more into it, this was just my experience trying to get a camera.

the price listed at bh was the same as the dealer price, with taxes included. No mention at the time of rebate at dealer or bhphoto...maybe it came out right after I bought it.

more on adorama issue a few posts down, including pics and google cache link to their listing I bought.
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...e-wall&p=1986267246&viewfull=1#post1986267246

the dealer I got it from is in florida,

Pro Sound, Inc
12501 NW 44[SUP]TH[/SUP] Street
Coral Springs, Fl. 33065

THE only dealer in my area. Out of the 15 listed in se florida, two were events only people and pro sound was the only dealer who would deal with a single sale like this...

I was extremely concerned to see this; can you please email me as soon as possible: Helen@adorama.com, with your order number, so I can get this checked out?

done.
But like I said, I had to open it to see if it was the wrong battery and your people said I could return it, but only if unopened...so that did not help...lol
And the response was 'sometimes amazon puts our listing with others and the descriptions, etc may be wrong as well as the photos.'
However, the photos on the listing were exactly what I got...a double labeled battery...
I charged it and it seems to be working.
I did not post this to rag on the company, just posted my first month trying to buy a prosumer camera and all the extras...and it was a big test in perseverance.
And it is the truth.

here are links to the pics showing the label mismatch, the product, and the order showing it is both a ppk5800 serial and a 5400 product.
this is not my imagination. Someone at adorama is confused

www.bobhoffman.com/ador1.jpg Shows the order serial a ppk vs product a wbg6 5400, adorama confused
www.bobhoffman.com/ador2.jpg
www.bobhoffman.com/ador3.jpg 3 and 4 show the dual labeled box. one for vbg6, the other for 5800 ppk
www.bobhoffman.com/ador4.jpg
and the google cache of your listing showing the item, and a pic showing the dual label
http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...-7-2-5800-Mah-Battery/dp/tech-data/B001JMRVVO+

and as you can tell by my first post, this was just another straw on the camel...not fun times..but a good learning experience.

Expect many cat videos to test this camera out. And to learn how to use it.

Helen,

I am stuck with the battery, I am fine with that, it is working.
but it is clearly mislabeled.

Reason for this post is after looking at all my information adorama responded that the 5800 does not exist and they sold me the correct item...(labeled as a 5800).

Adorama says the 5800 does not exist and therefore I got the right battery....
I give you exhibit A, a panasonic vbg6pp-k 5800 that does not exist...on the panasonic site.
http://www.panasonic.com/business/professional-video-accessories/vwvbg6ppk.asp

still banging my head.

Helen, i bought it and am gonna use it. It is a higher price than the 5400 deserves, but lower than the 5800 should be.
The facts, pics, sales page, everything shows you are clearly mislabeling the 5400 as the 5800... A battery your purchasing manager says does not exist. (emails from adorama)

and you can clearly see on your own website you have the mftr model and the sku model confused
your database has an error...might want to look into that....the PPK is a 5800, not a 5400.

http://www.adorama.com/PCVWVBG6PPK.html
Panasonic 7.2v Rechargeable Lithium-Ion 5400 mAh Battery Pack for AG-HMC40, AG-HMC70 and AG-HMC150 AVCCAM Camcorders
SKU: PCVWVBG6PPK MFR: VW-VBG6

I am happy that you would look into it, shocked that your purchase manager confronted with the facts and your mislabeled amazon listing and product thinks all is fine.

whatever.... That battery and the $200 mic is the last thing I am ordering from you guys...just too many red flags here for me.

sorry for the extra posts on this guys, but the story ends here..all is well, all is working, and wiser when buying things.
Just downloaded some stuff from barry green and callboxlive.

Big booyah to barry green's video where he actually explains that waveform doo-hickey on the camera. That really clarifies how to read it man, thanks!!!
