AC130: AC130 Flash Banding

In a nutshell I'm hoping someone can tell me how bad the flash banding on the AG130 really is?

We shoot concerts and our HMC150 has been great. However a few of the features on the AG130 (improved resolution on the LCD monitor and redundant recording) make it very attractive.

We started out with the TM700's and the flash banding with the 1/4" 3mos chips is terrible but I've read that the 1/3" chips should not look so ugly.

Thanks in advance,

As an MOS-based camera, it's going to have flash-banding like any other MOS camera has.

If you want to avoid flash banding, look at the HPX250. It's MOS, yes, but it has a special circuit in there that eliminates (or nearly eliminates) the appearance of flash banding.

Flash banding seems very well controlled on my AC130, in my opinion. I've been pleased with how well it handles flash. It certainly does a way better job than many Sony camcorders, which can really give some ugly looking bands across the screen.

I shot this video below inside a very dark indoor venue, and I had to use a fair amount of gain. You can see how bright and overexposed the lights in the room are. People took some flash photos of the band, and they are not that noticeable. I think that Panasonic has generally been able to cope much better with flash with their camcorders than Sony has. I've seen some Sony pro camcorders produce some really annoying bands across the screen.

Although as Barry mentioned, the HPX250 has an advanced feature in it that pretty much eliminates the effects of flash.

Thank you both for your responses and Lance thanks for posting the clip.

While the banding exhibited in the posted clip is no where near as bad as our little TM700, I still have some concern about the CMOS chips. There are just too many flashes, on stage and off, at some of the shows that we shoot. And while I would love to make the step up to an HPX250 and P2 it's just not in the budget at this time.

So for us it looks like another HMC150 is the way to go.

Thanks again for your help.
