Hi there,

I am pretty impressed about the new panny cameras ac130/ac160.

While looking for some informations about them, I found an interesting brochure about hpx250, which seems to have the same sensor that ac130/ac160

http://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/sales_o/broch_pdf/ag-hpx250.pdf

As You can read there, HPX250 has a special flash band detection and compensation system.

Can anyone confirm, if this system works also for ac130/ac160?

best regards
Mac

That looks like a very nice feature. Event shooters really need something like this.

It'd be ironic if it wasn't also on the cameras where it's likely to be needed most.

Well Jim,

It's certainly not listed in the brochure which is in this thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?259916-Ag-AC130-160-official-brochure-is-up!

As an owner of two Ex-1s and having done weddings with them for years, I can honestly say that no client ever commented on seeing photographer's flash banding through their video, even though it drove me crazy.

I never even bothered to use their browser software to fix it, and it's SO common on news clips now, everyone just seems used to it.

Cheers,

Vaughan

You're probably right, Vaughan. Given the choice between the 130's higher resolution, or the 150's cleaner flashes, most clients would probably prefer the 130.

Still, it drives me nuts! N-V-T-S, nuts!

Seems strange, though, that the models most likely to be used by event videograpers, and hence the two mnodels that most need the feature, might be the two models which don't have it.

Agree that the flash banding is mostly ignored - or completely ignored - by the average customer. Still annoying. CMOS issues in general are like that....annoying to the pros, invisible to the masses.

But I also agree that not including this feature on the 130/160 is somewhat strange since they are geared more to event shooters than the 250 is....and camera flashes are common at events like weddings.

Meh, regardless, have my eye on the 130 or 160. Don't use or need P2 and the additional capabilities of the 250 for my business.

I only just noticed, but looking at the 250 Brochure, it looks like you can record onto a single SD card (like with the 150), rather than P2 cards if you want to. Camera sill costs a lot more though :(

Somehow I missed that. Can you point me to the document you're talking about?

Oh. I didn't see any mention of recording onto it but i thought that because you can see the slot right beside the P2 slots on page 5, and there is an SD card on page 9, then you might be able to. Oh well. Sorry to get anybody's up :(

The SD card is only used for storing scene files and user files and loading metadata files. Not for footage.

Kinda figured that, since I'd never heard that before. Didn't see any mention of AVCHD on the brochure either (which would have probably been necessary to record onto the SD cards).

Still got my eyes on the 130/160. Hopefully I can sell one of my HMC150 cameras for a little spare coin to offset the new goods.

AVCHD...would have probably been necessary to record onto the SD cards

Don't let anyone make you believe this. UHS class SD cards are plenty fast enough for AVC-I. It's way past time Panny made a camera to serve that need.

Surely that SD slot has the same functions as on the 370~ just for transferring scene files and settings....

Flash banding isn't nearly as problematic as rolling shutter...
Flash banding is rolling shutter...

Rolling shutter manifests itself in many ways -- through partial exposure, wobble, skew, etc. It's all tied to the same thing, the fact that the sensor's shutter "rolls" down through the frame. At least the FBC can fix one manifestation of rolling shutter.

You are right. I guess when I think of the phrase 'rolling shutter' I think of the horizontal jello skew. Flash banding is frustrating, but atleast it doesn't make peoples' faces look like an acid trip.
