GH2 about to finish shooting my feature :)

In regards to the EVF: I set my cameras to automatically switch LCD/EVF. Then I flip the LCD so that it is tucked in against the body (not visible). In that configuration, the LCD will be turned off all the time, since it's not visible, and the EVF will be on only when your eye is against it. This saves a lot of battery. Also set the camera to shut off automatically (it's in the Economy menu on a GH1, not sure about the GH2's menus).

Obviously there are shooting situations in which I use the LCD; the above procedure is just what I normally do.

just wanted to let you know i have 2-3 productions days left
and i'm done shooting a whole f@#$ing feature with this little GH2!
i'm using almost just available light and getting great results with 20mm + 50mm FD's.
i got exactly what i need, no need for re-shooting, some low light shots can be easily post fixed..
some shots can be easily post-stabilized.
i like shooting only handheld (with the cheapest shoulder mount),
organic and flat, so GH2+FD's+ultra-con filter are a perfect team..
A clear winner over almost all canon footage i ever saw.
i rarely got codec breaking, and a little cinegrain can hide most of the color banding.

of course it's all very limited, like all dslrs, but for me it was the perfect tool at the right time.
so anyway- DON'T UNDER-ESTIMATE THE POWER OF GH2 :)

*BTW-
does anybody else gets a weird color change after shooting over 5 minutes??
it's not appearing on the recorded footage, just on the EVF/LCD..
i guess my GH2 is defective- but if the footage is un-harmed.. WHO CARES !!!

That sounds really cool. cant wait to see it. Do you think you could have done it well with just the 20mm? Right now all i have is the 20mm pancake and also the 14-42 kit and am hoping to being able to do most of it with the 20. A used 50 is cheap enough i may be able to pick one up but money is tight.

See this, which I shot entirely on the 20mm: http://vimeo.com/20343716. ECU shots would be somewhat difficult since you'd be about a foot or two from the subject, but I think you could make it work.

that looks great. the 20mm is very versatile so i plan to use it as much as possible. I will definitely get my moneys worth with the lens.

My next lens will most likely be a 50, but i cant wait to get out and shoot in the meantime.

I specifically use ONLY FD lenses for a vintage soft look.
It works well with GH2 cause it levels the sharp image to
A good balance.

You'll definitely get your money's worth. I have a 50 too, also a good choice.

CANON FD FTW!!!

Seriously though, the Canon FD are the absolute best bang for buck manual lenses for GH1/GH2. I have the following nFD lenses:

24mm f/2
50mm f/1.2
17mm f/3.5
35-105mm f/3.5
50mm f/1.8
28mm f/2.8

I wholly recommend to 50mm f/1.2 if one can be found, especially the nFD version, which has beautiful coating and lens flare.Spent almost total $1500 on my collection, worth every cent!

where's the 20mm/2.8 ??
gets you a pretty wide angle + decent light for lots of uses (my main lens for most scenes)

but then you cannot match the FD 50mm look. totally different. in my case not possible.

I'm working on a short where I shot all of the shots on the 20 except for one, and only one, on a Canon FD 50mm. Personally, I don't know that I could find that shot if I weren't looking for it. That short should be ready in a few days, so when it is, I'll post it here and you can take a look.

But Roei was refering to the two 20mm. Different story.

i was referring to the FD 20mm, Colton referred to his Panny 20mm, saying it will almost match his 50mm FD.. no confusion (although a bit of disagreement ;) )

Hahah this gret news. Thanks for sharing.

I cant wait to get the GH2 myself and join this exclusive creative club!

What were you using to power you're GH2 during this feature production?
We came up with a lasting power solution just recently. One configuration (the Power Plate) allows to use any common DV battery as a source, another to use any 14V-16V battery for even longer run time - just connect using a D-Tap, XLR4 or car power - whatever you happen to own already.

I see you guys have been busy developing stuff for the GH2 users.
My only concern with a setup like this using larger batteries is the size and weight.
I'm kind of looking forward to shedding the weight of my DVX100B for DSLR on a monopod.
I'm just liking the small form factor.
If it were possible to use this setup efficiently in a run n gun situation then I would gladly go for it.
Its really tempting...it is!

Congrats on your feature - looking forward to seeing some footage.

I'm shooting a feature length doc project over a couple of years. I started on the GH2, expecting to "upgrade" later, but haven't felt the need yet. I'm using mostrly old Arri standard mount prime lenses. I agree - none of us should under-estimate the power of GH2. It's great to see some really interesting projects comming out shot on this little camera now.

to be more precise, IF you're on a low/no budget project and you need the best tool, it's definitely the GH2, even considering the 8-bit codec limitations.
but if money is less of a problem, then of course it's no match to an Epic or Alexa. (although it IS a close match to AF100 in terms of sensor and colors)

Good point Boncrek, using a monopod you could put the DV battery/plate in your pocket or belt pack, but it would make it kind of tricky if you forget that you have a wire there. Probably this solution is more appropriate when using a rig, a tripod, cage, etc.
