A7s to Shogun in 60p Studders and Drops Frames!

So in order to do 60P on the show gun in 1080P It must be set it to 60P in the second menu of the A7s. However when I try to do any panning or movements I can see that it looks like it's dropping frames almost as if someone pause the footage and then started recording really quickly. Seems to be about 2 to 3 frames is being lost. It does this even well not recording. I see this going on the screen of the shogun in live view so I know it's not the SSD to blame.

i'm trying to figure out if this could be an HDMI cable or needs a firmware update? I have the HDMI cable that is made by Atomos.

I have contacted them as well and they're pretty sure that it's nothing to do with the recorder, so what could possibly be happening with the a7S?

EDIT: i tried playing footage from internal sdxc card on a7s into the shogun and it still skips frames. So Its definitely the recorder.

Hey so I think now after reading here and your other posts on atomos's forum it sounds like the recorder... You did say you tried it on another monitor without issue right and with another ssd?

The judder happens while live view feed 60p to the shogun, it also happens when I playback footage from the SDXC card that I recorded earlier in the day perfectly fine. Plays back great on the A7s. Once I connect the atoms to play back in 60p it judders and frame skips.

According to what I read the display of the shogun is adding a pulldown. which is weird. Also it may not show up in the recorded footage. Maybe its just while playback or monitoring in the shogun, but if it doesn't show during the playback of the SSD on my computer that means its still useable just means that monitoring sucks.

If i was to guess I would say that the monitor is 24p, and it 3:2 pulldown on the 24p so that makes no sense why it would be like that.

I can confirm playback or files recorded on the shogun in 60p still judder on my mac pro and macbook pro. Shogun has issues.

have you remembered to set your shutter to 1/125?
I'd love to kill sony for all the wasted shots i did in 50p @ 1/50th shutter....

Hmm? They're not wasted. It's the equivelant of using 1/25 with 25fps. It's more blurry but isn't that an artistic decision anyways? Every frame is still independent and different from one another.

I think he is referring to something we just discovered our selves shooting 60P at 1/60 a second. If you shoot 60P at 1/60 you end up with 30P footage were every other frame is a duplicated giving you 60P. Technically at 60P and 1/60 the frame duratoin and shutter duration are identical, 360 degree shutter, which is physically impossible since it would require the sensor to read/write a frame and then instantly begin reading another. Most cameras will alter the shutter speed slightly to allow for this but it appears that the sony just duplicates the previous frame instead. Shooting at a faster shutter speed will prevent this happening, as far as we have seen but are still testing. We have only noticed it on the shogun and are not sure about internal yet. So up to this point all our 60P footage will have to be converted to 30P since it is useless at 60P.

@dhessel

Are you talking about the A7s? Because I shoot 60P at 1/60 sec all the time, and it works perfectly. It produces true 60P footage, not 30P.

Yes we have found that when shooting 1/60 at 60P on the shogun we get duplicate frames.

Go to Camera Menu, Page 7, and set Auto Slow Shut. to OFF. That should solve the problem, at least for internal recording. Can't speak for the Shogun.
