A7S support on O7Q

With the new 4k Hdmi recorders coming out for cameras like the Sony A7S, will the O7Q be able to record that stream from them?

The A7S was announced for around $2500. Would be a neat little travel 4k camera setup, even though the 7Q is a little large.

The Shogun also looks like a neat little device.

We have pledged to have a path for support of the A7S and the GH4 via HDMI for the Odyssey7Q. I can't be more specific as we have not yet finalized what that path will be.

BTW, what 4K HDMI recorders are you referring to?

I was referring to the shogun, but I imagine if 4k is possible over hdmi, eventually many more companies will start incorporating and more recorders will come out. At NAB the only one I was aware of is the shogun... and hopefully CD soon :-)

Is there any estimate on the 7Q doing the 4k... I know you guys pledged to do it, but what is the timeline.

And does anyone know when the shogun will be released?

Understood. When you wrote "recorders" I thought maybe I had somehow missed an announcement!

Can't give a solid timeline, but we hope to have it reasonably soon. There actually is a way to cobble it right now, but we prefer a nice, sleek solution.

I'm guessing the cobbled together solution would be to use the new Blackmagic 4K HDMI to HDSDI converter in between the camera and recorder?

I would be happy to have the cobbled together for my gh4 right now. And the Sony A7s. Loving the 7Q on my C500. Want to pull the trigger on another, but need to know that it covers the GH4 and A7s. Don't make me go to Atmos.

I think when the A7s comes out the option that is available will be what I get :-)

And if the upgrade for the 7Q is priced to compete with the shogun, i.e the update being expensive, then I'd probably buy myself a shogun for travel. I might get one anyway :-P

I would seriously hope that before CD even attempts to "Cobble together" a 4K solution for the GH4 and A7, they "cobble" together a few of the many promised features for the FS700.

I hope they finish all the c500 stuff too. At NAB I saw and liked the Atmos, but if CD can make the q7 work with all that it has promised and hdmi for gh4 and a7s I would much rather have three Q7's one each for c500, gh4, and A7s. I travel a lot and like the idea of backup, and also shared media, though the CD media is very expensive.
Mitch make this happen. I don't want to stray into another camp!

We are working on it all. That's why I have not shared timelines and explanations of the solutions, because we want to deliver what is best for you at the best price we can and in the most reasonable timeline. We have already said that we are committed to making it happen, and the solutions are coming. There are different design groups working on different projects, and a software programmer on one is not slowed down by a hardware engineer on another. It is all coming as quick as we can provide it.

Not over HDMI. If you find an HDMI to SDI converter that will properly pass that 1080p50 or 60 signal to the Odyssey7Q then it can be recorded in DPX stacks. Please be aware that this is data intensive.

Mitch, have you base tested the a7s into the 7q yet with any sort of converter?

could you check with the engineers which converter they used to test any 50/60p hdmi to sdi conversion to back up the claim it works? I've tried 3 with no luck, I'm not going to keep buying them only to find no converter with do this with the 7q or it's a 7q bug

I'm not aware of any convertors that would change 4K HDMI into multiple SDI links for the O7Q to record 4K, has anyone seen one?

Another alternative is slapping a down convertor between the 4K HDMI and the recorder (because i think 99 times out of 100 that 8 bit 4K Stream will be downconverted at some stage). I think it was James Miller that had done this but with quite a cheap convertor (not such good downscaling). I guess with HDMI based 4K you're into home theatre territory rather than pro video, so there's perhaps some opportunities there.

The O7Q will record the 1080 HDMI output to ProRes as it stands, although it's not clear if ProRes gives that much more than the pretty good XAVC onboard - on a practical level.

Although you do get some decent monitoring for the camera...

Mind you it's a bit of the 'emperor has new clothes' because the 700/O7Q is an infinitely better camera combination. I think for what it is the A7s is fantastic and i've enjoyed using it as a stills camera for the past few weeks which is why i bought it. It's also a very useful B cam and the XAVC is fine for that.

cheers
Paul

I'll check with the engineers as to what work has been done with the A7s. We do own one for various testing, just as we own samples of many other camera models.

There is a box from Blackmagic Design that converts a 4K HDMI signal to SDI (albeit 6G-SDI, which means another BMD box is needed to get 6G-SDI to dual 3G-SDI or quad HD-SDI). However please be aware that the Odyssey7Q currently does not record 4K video, only specific 4K RAW signals from either the FS700 or the C500. However we are hard at work on a 4K compressed recording mode for the Odyssey7Q. This will be compatible with the video format from the A7s.

Good to know.
I'd suggest adding the option to do UltraHD-to-HD 10-bit compressed. This would be a very useful feature for an 8-bit source camera like the a7s.

Thanks mitch. Just see if they've used those converter boxes or any other just to get 1080 50/60p from a hdmi source into the 7q sdi port and record without issue.

Hi mitch, any news from engineers on this one (1080p50/60 hdmi into sdi working at all and with which magic box? Someone local has come forward with a 7s so I'll be testing this with the 7q this next week. Cheers
