A7S Observations and Tests

Yyeah but it charges through usb. May not need for it :-)

The USB will charge the battery pack only when the camera is turned off. From the user guide:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Connect the camera with the battery pack inserted to the AC Adaptor (supplied) using the micro USB cable (supplied), and connect the AC Adaptor to the wall outlet (wall socket).

and

Charging by connecting to a computer

The battery pack can be charged by connecting the camera to a computer using a micro USB cable.

1. Turn off the product, and connect to the USB terminal of the computer.

The A7s goes into usb mode when the cord is plugged into the camera, even when it's connected to the crappy USB wall adapter that came with the A7. I cycled through all the USB settings and none of them would allow me to shoot while charging. Though you can use the A7 camera remote desktop program to control the camera - it doesn't charge while connected. I think the AC adapter may be the only way to shoot and draw power.

But batteries are cheap. I bought a 2 wasabi batteries + a wall charger for $24 on amazon. Buy 4 of those sets, pop the chargers on a strip outlet and you'll have tons of power for $100.

I have only shot a little with it but I am pretty sure its rolling shutter is worse than the BMPC and the 5d. I will post tests soon. the rest of it looks really really promising.

Samuel H measures it as 30.5ms, which is almost as bad as the Nikon D90 at 33ms, and worse than the infamous 5Dii

with that said, in the morning I will have a new clip up - the color and dynamic range is absolutely lovely and nighttime shooting with it is incredible. this is the ultimate cheap night camera and also really beautiful quick camera, rolling shutter not withstanding

Hi Noah informative thread, am about to order the Commlite EF to NEX adapter - any reason i should save up and get the metabones instead?
I'm not expecting fast AF with any of these adapters but would love to use my Canon 70-200 2.8 ii for photographs too, is the AF in stills mode a waste of time or useable

Some additional observations.

The Black level adjustment doesn't appear to affect Slog gamma, you can set it to what you want but it doesn't change the blacks in the output file at all. Slog2 has raised blacks, (about 20 to 30 in 8 bit 255 - which is a huge chunk of storage wasted)

The Black gamma will affect the image, it won't change the black level but it will crush or raise blacks but it doesn't change the range at all just mangles the bottom end. Very limited use.

What is concerning is the amount and nature of shadow noise:

A7s-Shadows.jpg

Big purple blobs, the top is the green channel which should be the 4 (full luminance) colour sampling.

This is the XAVC direct into After Effects, i don't know if there are decoding issues as i've never messed with it before. When i get an HDMI cable i'll see what the signal is like bypassing the XAVC in case that's the problem.

It's odd, i know it's shadows and they'll be crushed but squeezing 12+ stops into 220 code values is pretty tough going all over, more so than the 700.

Has anyone else seen this?

cheers
Paul

I'm on a job shooting 9 short films back to back alternating between the a7s and fs700+7q and the a7s is holding up very very well. Also check out Vision Color's Impulz Kodak Vision3 50D DP FC LUT, it makes this camera look pretty amazing...

First a disclaimer: I don't yet have an A7s, so all my observations are from grading other people's footage (mainly Roman's stuff)

Quite impressed with the camera so far! When grading 8bit S-Log2 it is VERY evident that the codec is not sufficient enough (mainly talking with Roman's footage in mind)
Everything is more or less acceptable until you start touching anything closely related to saturation. As I don't have my camera yet I can't test if adding some saturation to the output (not sure of a better way to explain it) will solve a lot of the noise issues I've come across. Might be something for you guys to test out.

Also, adding a -15 overall hue does wonders to the colours. I was very surprised to see what it did to the footage. This could possible be done in-camera with WB and tint, but on all Roman's clips it works wonders!

Just my 2%
