A7s internal/Shogun UHD/FS7 UHD internal Comparo

@Need Creative, that's odd, I can see it on the YT video at 1080 just fine, it is the one on the right side, watch my forehead, it is like I am getting younger. :)

@RatLab oh thanks for clarifying.

I didn't get this all the time, I put in a trouble ticket to Atomos, let's see what they say.

Doug, glad to see that the review on your site (http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/atomos-shogun-review/) has an update explaining the "skin softening" issue. Perhaps you should hand it in here as well?

Regarding the CPU consumption with ProRes vs. GH4 internal 4K files: H.264 decoding is usually done by hardware decoders included in the GPU and so it does not really consume CPU in a noteworthy amount. I get fluent 4K playback even on a quite slow ULV core i5 with Intel HD 4000 GPU in the Quicktime player and in Premiere Pro. Things look totally different, when you use DaVinci Resolve which blows up the channels to 32 bit and routes all data through the GPU. Here you may get dropped frames quickly if the GPU and video memory is not powerful enough. But this has nothing to do with the encoding.

I would also prefer recording 4K from a GH4 with the Shogun a lot - not only due to the 10 Bit 4:2:2 option. I also think the h.264 compression applied to the internal 4K recording is far too much for more dynamic scenes or scenes with lower light where significant noise comes into the game and kills the 4K details when compressed with h.264 at 100 Mbps.

Keep in mind this is a 4k Bayer sensor, so 422 vs 420 may not make a big difference since they are both essentially calculated/interpolated from a Bayer sensor with essentially fewer samples than 420.

I'm curious as I never saw that on my unit. I've shot a fair bit now. I see it in your footage and the only thing I can think of is (and I'm speculating I haven't tested this theory) is that the A7S doesn't output the full 4k image until you tell it to record. And that's only accomplished by pressing the record button on the A7S, even while it's connected to the Shogun. That's the only way I used it, anyway.

Doug I don't see any "skin smoothing" effect with the Shogun and A7S at all. I don't know what's going on there but it's not at all typical.

Received my Shogun yesterday. I tested it on myself and instantly noticed how smooth my skin looked. I'll try to test more.

Anyone else have "wiggle room" when batteries are inserted? Shifting the battery slightly doesn't cause a shutdown, but still somewhat alarming that they aren't 100% locked in place.

View attachment 96214I am a bit confused, I pulled a fast key on this green screen image leaving a little bit of green on the edges so I could see how much better the Shogun is with it's 4:2:2 color, but I am not seeing any difference at all, even at 400%. What I'm I missing here?

Try doing color keys in Colorista II (change hue/saturation/lightness). That's where I notice the most improvement w/ external recorders. Many times ProRes has a negligible improvement over [modern] internal codecs.

EDIT: I see that you tested that...maybe 4K from GH4 nails it internally. With the A7S I definitely saw an improvement in 1080p ProRes (using Ninja Blade).
