A7s internal/Shogun UHD/FS7 UHD internal Comparo

I am just starting to dial in the A7s with Shogun and I am comparing to the FS7.

I initially uploaded the 1080 timeline, including 200% blowup. I am now uploading a 4K version as well. I will add that in the next post.

Both cameras were set on Slog2, 3 for the FS7. All Factory settings, both cameras rated at 3200 same lens at f10, 5500K.

Bear in mind Vimeo compresses as well, downloading the 4K version orig upload will give you the best result.

I am not tuning here I am just using factory settings for everything. I think the results speak for themselves. The only grading was bring the blacks to 0 and whites to 100 raise the mids a bit to roughly match shots, and add bit of sat. This was done in FCPX less than 15 sec time grading each shot. If graded in Resolve and sharpening noise suppressed etc. I am sure I could make all these shots look much better. But this is to demonstrate what you start out with.

I hope you find it interesting I do. next I will be in resolve building LUTs.

Thanks for posting this. It's surprising that the Shogun recording seems to add more contrast or at least drops the black level in comparison to the internal recording. And it's very interesting to compare the FS7 and A7S/Shogun footage - I think everyone will agree that the FS7 is sharper and more detailed, with less noise. I suppose this is to be expected. As such, I'm not sure I'll use the A7S for 4K output , should I EVER need to deliver at this resolution. But the Shogun clearly adds utility to this little camera. And in terms of noise the shogun recording appears to hold up well in this test at 4K as compared to the internal recording, and this dispels my concerns from your first sample.

Hey olof ... what is your battery life like with your Shogun? I am experiencing significantly shorter run times than the stated 2-3hrs ... even with batteries rated at twice the standard capacity! Also my unit does not recognize the drive (1TB Transcend SSD 370 model as per their spec) when powered on. I have to remove drive and reinsert while unit is on for it to see drive. Is this the case with your unit ...or do I have a dud?

I get less than an hour out of a Sony A7s battery. But I use bigger batteries externally, see photo:

I am working on a whole kit for the A7s including a wood handle, this is part of the kit, the cable can be very long so you can have the battery in a pocket. I have the plates and dummy batteries in stock now, if you want one contact me directly. These will run the camera for 4+ hrs.

I use an old not recommended OZD SSd and it works great, I have a couple others on order to try as well. Contact tech support if you continue having problems with a recommended drive. I would also try another HD or SSD to make sure the problem is with the drive not the Shogun, if problem continuous. I have had SSDs go bad a few times, they are like anything else high tech.

@olof ... Thanks for your response but you have not answered my specific questions;

1. I am complaining about battery life of the Atomos Shogun not the Sony A7s camera

2. If you have your drive inserted into your Atomos Shogun and power the Shogun up ... does it read your drive ...or do you have a message saying No Media? This is what happens in my case, once the Shogun is on and I pull out and reinsert the drive, then it sees it .....

I get about 1.5 hrs on the battery shipped with the Shogun. Much longer probably if not recording only using as scopes and monitor.

The Swit battery I am showing in the picture will run both the camera and the Shogun, I will make time tests for this soon and have it on my Webstore. I can have 2 cables come out of the plate or I can make a cable that plugs into this battery and has a D-tap end for the Shogun.

And my drives show up immediately when powering on once they are formatted by the Shogun. Try reformatting again in the Shogun, and contact tech support if this persists.

I am seeing 30 min out of a battery myself. And the same SSD issue. I have to power up and then insert the SSD.

I get about 50 minutes 4K (2160p ProRes HQ) recording time with the 2600mAh battery provided with the Shogun. I am using a Samsung EVO 840 Basic 500 GB SSD updated to latest firmware (in the PC using Samsung Magician software). No mounting delays / issues so far. With this capacity I can record 1:24 hrs in ProRes HQ or 3 hrs in ProRes LT (both at 2160p).

To those who see significantly less battery time: Are you sure, the battery was fully charged? Which voltage did you see in the display on the Shogun? It should be something >= 8.0V. I ask because my charger cradle had a defect and did not fully charge the battery in the beginning.

A 2600 mAh battery comes with the unit like most of the Atomos products? Spring for some larger ones. You can pick them up on eBay for a song. The 2600 mAh ones are difficult to find but you can get them in 2500 mAh and much bigger ones.

If I were to get one, I would power it using one of their dummy batteries that goes to a P-Tap and then cable it to an Anton Bauer Dionic 90 or equivalent. Those batteries people here are talking about are tiny, tiny camcorder batteries. Is it meant to get you going, nothing more.

@Olof, its hard to believe this difference in sharpness. Did you do it with A7s in crop mode or fullframe? What lense did you use? Was it a fullframe lense on both? An average lense on fullframe will produced less sharpness as in crop mode or the smaller FS7 sensor I guess.

I returned my Shogun and will stick with what the FS7 can do by itself. Not worth it to me adding a prores recorder especially with the flaws of the Shogun as is today.

I was in FF mode on the A7s, both are with the same lens the 24-70 f4 Sony.

I will be testing the same or very similar scene today with the O7Q+ as well both on the A7s and FS7.

On the A7s you will have less DOF so BG will be less sharp but the dolls blouse was in focus on both shots as well as the writing on the X-rite card.

I will also say that the FS7 sensor is very good, I understand it is the same sensor as the F5 and the processing is also the same as the F5. This will make a big difference.

I will post more results here in the next few days, it does take quite a bit of time to do these tests.
