A7s internal/Shogun UHD/FS7 UHD internal Comparo

I'm not sure I'd take a non-dragon EPIC over an FS7 even at the same price, DR on the FS7 seems to be absolutely stellar (would love to see a side-by-side DR test with the alexa, though it's just camera porn for me: both way out of my budget).

Current BH prices:
a7S+SDfor2h: $2500+$50=$2550
a7s+Shogun+SSDfor2h: $2500+$2000+$400=$4900
a7S+O7Q++SSDfor2h: $2500+$2300+$1200=$6000
FS7+QXDfor2h=$8000+$600=$8600

Add batteries and the more expensive options get even more expensive. I think I'm sticking to a7S internal recording until a cheaper recorder is out (next ninja?)

I looked forward to the release of the Shogun, but it looks like these 4K recorders are only making larger captures and not improving the images so much. Whether it's 8 or 10 bit doesn't seem to make a noticible difference. Also, yeah you get a monitor to boot, but these don't seem to do so well in bright conditions. I don't have money to burn so I will wait and see and prioritize my next purchases. I do wish FullHD high bright monitors with LUT capabilities would be entering the markets soon.

I would love to see a dynamic range test for the FS7, but really 14 stops? Didn't they say 15 stops before for the a7S?

3D luts in the shogun could convince me to get it. that would make it a DP7-PRO LCD with added recording. I got my a7s for the HD quality. 4k just makes it future proof. If my clients need 4k i just rent an F5.

Yesterday I did a little production with two "fire fairies". I think, at the moment there is no better choice available for these light conditions than the A7S. Due to the low light and the extremely high dynamic when you film fire directly, I decided to use S-Log2 and the C-Log preview mode in the Shogun - although not perfectly matching the S-Log2 profile - was very helpful. Although the 4K resolution is not really needed here, the 4K footage gives me some additional options for cropping to the desired display window and working with 10 bit.

I used a 5200 mAh battery on the Shogun that took me over the whole day and there was still some energy left (the camera consumed three batteries during that time).

Here you find some "making of" shots (taken with a seperate Sony A7R):

So yes your prices essentially agree that the FS7 is a decent price jump ahead of a 4k a7s. As to your epic comment, after shooting extensively with both dragon and epic x cameras (and fs7 might I add), the added dr and resolution is nice on the dragon, but even so I'd definitely take an x over an fs7, especially since the dragon is a grainy beast even at ISO 800. The usable dr isn't drastically different on the two cameras (fs7 and epic x), plus the fuller 5k sensor and added frame rates make it much more desirable... But it's also nearly twice as much... like the fs7 is nearly twice as much as a 4ka7s.

confused.jpgI am a bit confused, I pulled a fast key on this green screen image leaving a little bit of green on the edges so I could see how much better the Shogun is with it's 4:2:2 color, but I am not seeing any difference at all, even at 400%. What I'm I missing here?

Dave, did you do this on a 1080p timeline? I'm beginning to wonder if, when compressing 4K into 1080 there is almost no advantage of 4:2:2.

Until you start stressing the image by adjusting the colors, you aren't going to see an appreciable different between an image short in 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 chroma subsampling, even if you blow up the image as you demonstrate. Chroma subsampling affects color keys greatly because it is relying on this data to make the subtle bite into the image it is masking. 4:2:2 is really considered a baseline requirement to pull a decent key (at least in terms of what a production house will request)

* I want to hear about this too, I'm fine with him posting this on both subforums. And he didn't even open a new thread so it's not a lot of pollution anyway...

* 422 should help keying even more than heavy color correction, having twice the chroma resolution should be a lot better when you're using chroma to isolate your subject from a green background.

* UHD 420 has 1920x1080 chroma resolution, UHD 422 has 1920x2160 chroma resolution. On a 1080p timeline, you are unlikely to see a big difference. On an UHD timeline... you'll have a difference in vertical resolution, but not in horizontal resolution, so, that's not the edge to look at for this test Dave!!

* Some cameras say they export 422 but users are reporting that it's actually 420 encoded in a 422 stream. There are charts to test this...

Doug I don't see any "skin smoothing" effect with the Shogun and A7S at all. I don't know what's going on there but it's not at all typical.
