A7s internal/Shogun UHD/FS7 UHD internal Comparo

I think that Olof already told us that he will make further
tests with the O7Q.
If you speak A7s and Shogun, of course the O7Q will come
to ones mind at a certain point. Both are comparable in a way as
they deliver the A7s 4k footage and provide a nice monitoring, too.

Um try 30 minutes for me. (Constant recording). 30-45 min is what I was seeing.

Olof stated: "I get about 1.5 hrs on the battery shipped with the Shogun. Much longer probably if not recording only using as scopes and monitor."

I'm curious if you are all shooting same resolution, frame rate and codec? Also, what features are enabled on the Shogun? I've yet to personally see the shogun myself but the recording, input/output and monitoring options will most likely have significant effect on battery run times. This is one reason Sony has so many on off software switches on features in their current stock of cameras. Every feature you have turned on consumes power...

Thats at 4k 24p with waveform on. Using it as intended. Even the CEO of Atomos admitted its 30-45min at that resolution, and they are changing out the included battery to something 2x the size. Has nothing to do with the camera, it's battery use is the same with or without the shogun.

Where did you see that statement?

...and they are changing out the included battery to something 2x the size.

To be honest: Although the 50 minutes I get with 2160p25 (no further functions like waveform activated) are quite far away from the "up to 3hrs" as advertised, I do not see a reason to ship it with a larger battery. For my purposes this capacity gives a good balance of usage time and weight but that may be quite subjective. Larger batteries mean more weight and stronger mounts.

So if you calculate a little you'll see that the Shogun draws up towards 38W if the 2600mAh battery only lasts 30 minutes that's far from the stated 11W.

It seems to make a difference what SSD you use. I have heard this from several shooters. And it does appear that 1TB SSDs can draw more and sometimes have trouble mounting.

I did get about 90 minutes on the first charge of the battery. A lot of that time was spent w/o an SSD in the slot, just using as a monitor. But I did put in a 240 old OZD that is not even on the approved list and tested UHD recording with that on the first battery charge as well, I had no problem with the not recommended SSD, but I did not fill it up all the way.

One thing to test and be aware of is that as SSDs fill up many will slow down a lot, so be sure to test your SSD thoroughly before using in a real shoot.

Since then I have used an approved Sandisk 240, and if you spend a lot of time recording UHD your battery runs down fast. In average use half recording half monitoring I would say you get 45 minutes with the 240 Sandisks.

Used just as a monitor it lasts quite a while. Like 90 minutes.

In my new tests I am using IDX brick power or Swit/Sony 60Whr batteries. But I will do some tests on the battery life of kit battery as well.

Maybe we should start a thread here specking results we get from different SSDs and batteries. I will start to keep an informal log of my results and post in a while.

Listen to the interview with Jeremy on Newsshooter.com. I have no issues really with using a larger battery except it should have been included. It is heavier. But it's not as bad as you think in practice.

That makes sense, and that is good to know. It's a great monitor, and one I'm eager to use on my FS7 too (well with a sun hood.)

I make a hood for the Shogun, it is shipping now. Price is $45.00.

Here is a link to order:
http://www.westsideavstore.com/index.php?p=product&id=98

Description:

Our lightweight hood for the Atmos Shogun. The soft fabric hood will comform to your face comfortably.
It attaches with velcro to the plastic top and back frames and if used without the fabric it will help to protect the
Shogun's screen. This hood slides on and off the Shogun quickly without removing the thumbscrew.
It attaches to your Noga Arm or swivel mount that you are using to mount the Shogun.
We include a thumbscrew for the top attachment.
The hood folds flat to sit in the Shogun carry box. All connections are easily accessible.
We will soon have a mounting system for the Shogun.

I now make it w/o the top circular cutout if you like. But it is nice to have the cutout on the bottom to use touch screen.

People reporting aliasing and moire in 4K on the A7s that's not in internal 1080p. Anyone else having these issues come up in fine textur-ed shots?

Not sure if I myself might have a defective battery, but the supplied battery that came with my Atomos Shogun only lasts minutes even after a full 100% recharge. When recording 4K from the A7s to the Shogun, the battery level is already in the red after less than 10 minutes, is this normal???I had heard somewhere that the supplied battery on the Shogun should last around 25-30 minutes when recording 4K.

Perhaps we can have a new thread on Shogun battery life? This thread is supposed to be talking about 4K recorded vs 1080p internal quality. Id like to see more samples if anyone has anything they can post.

Those who are looking for a sun hood might take into account solutions for FPV monitors typically used in the multi copter community. I attached one to the Shogun. You simply put a Velcro® strip on the Shogun and can add / remove the hood in seconds.

I also was looking for an intermediate solution that avoids stressing the hot shoe especially when using larger batteries. Until I get a better cage, this is my current DIY solution:

Details can be found in the section "Update 5":

Regarding moiré in 4K:
I did not notice it so far. As the 4K image (at 24/25/30p) is read from the sensor without line-skipping / pixel binning and as there is an AA-filter in front of the sensor, this camera should be quite resistant to moiré.
