a7S II announced!!

The slog3 test shows better DR than slog2, as expected.
And 1080p120 looks pretty nice. Not the sharpest 1080p video ever, but I see no artifacts. Which also bodes very well for 1080p60 being just as nice as in the a7S in APS-C mode, but with no artifacts in FF mode.
And $3000 is better than I expected from the Euro price. Which is silly because it's exactly as I should have expected: here we have to add VAT, and the cost of the mandatory two-year warranty.

In any case, my a7S is not hitting ebay just yet, because the switch to the new one would cost me at least $1300, and also because I'd be without a camera until November (Xmas, actually, since I need the US version for 24p and that's when I could get it). My next big project will be shot on May. Lots of thinking will go on between now and then...

I've got a lot out of my A7s, so i don't mind. But there have been a number of times i've not used it because of lack of IBIS and onboard 4K, so for me, it's a worthwhile upgrade.

No EU preorders. And in fact for my A7s i imported that from HK anyway.

And Gamma assist + fully customizable zebra is pretty cool.
Curious exactly how unusable s-log3 will be even with 4k scaled down. :P

I think it will be fine, no problem.

I must say the Sony demos vids totally underwhelm. I mean the big 4K one shows nothing of the A7sII, it's the same as the A7s demo. In fact the clouds and sky clipping look positively awful. Terrible demos IMHO. And Skin on there? Same as A7s.

So i'm a bit doubtful again

cheers

I would prefer the A7s II sensor and IBIS in a full frame FE mount camcorder body like the VG900 that has a much larger battery , zoom rocker for 28-135mm F4 PZ lens and 4K shooting without getting overheated.
VG900 vs A7r

I'm underwhelmed. With the price jump I'd think twice before selling to upgrade. I think an external 4k recorder might be a better way to update my old first-gen A7s, especially as we have cheaper options now.
IBIS is a nice addition. PDAF would have been nice too, especially given how well it was implemented in the A7rII. SLOG3 in 8bit is kinda silly.
Let's hope it makes prettier pictures somehow with less rolling shutter, otherwise I'll wait for mkIII.

I just saw that the Sony A7sII can be ordered from Sept 17th at B&H at 2999 usd. So looks like some of you guys can get it immediately. Do let me know how it compares with the previous. I may have it for my team as a speciality camera.

Someone mentioned on another forum that Slog3 will be worse for skin tones since "there are even less values assigned to mid gray level. Increasing the dynamic range with 8 bits is just not good for skin colors."

Any thoughts on this? Are they right?

Jup, that will definitely be the case!
Have a look here, where I've linked a per-stop chart:

If you shoot skin, the best option in 8 bit, while still maintaining a bit of flexibility, are the Cine 1-4 gammas. I use and recommend Cine1 (HG4809G33).

why still 8bit via HDMI? That seems like an odd decision. What a bummer. Plus they still don't have an option for true DCI standard 4096x2160. Not that it is used a lot but it would be a nice thing to have.

If you are someone who uses lights during a production (which most serious productions do) then the GH4 still has those 2 advantages. V-log with 10 bits if recorded externally and 4096x2160 resolution for a true 4k or 2k distribution. Oh yeah and the optional SDI if thats important. Don't count the GH4 out yet.

Not 100% sure about that :) with this Mk2. Slog3 offers a better distribution of values around skin compared with Slog2. I think it's difficult to say for sure until we get our hands on some.

Also Slog2 on A7s had non standard black points. It's always possible the same is true of Slog3. Whilst as a container Slog3 can hold 15 stops (i think) compared with 13.5 stops for Slog2 if those mids are distributed better than overall it should be the same or even a bit better. Perhaps sony would clip the top of the Slog3 curve for example to avoid wasting space.

The 8 bit is still just so glaringly wrong. But what can we do?

I totally agree. I think you get yourself a new 4K recorder and you are set. Who knows if this thing will overheat like the A7RII.

native ISO in slog 3 is now 1600, instead of 3200.
This is great. Exactly what I was hoping for over here (and notice the thread is about "daydreaming"; I love living in the future).
slog3 at ISO 1600 is the absolutely best possible use of this sensor. My guess right now: two stops better DR than the a7S.

The a7S could shoot slog2 at ISO 400 (elecronicallally-same-as-no-PP-ISO 100). It would have the same DR as it has now, maybe with a bit less noise in the shadows.
With the same settings (elecronicallally-same-as-no-PP-ISO 100) and slog3, it would be ISO 1600 and it would have around two stops better DR than it currently has (1.5 because of slog3, 0.5 because of less noise in shadows). I would overexpose it by one or two stops, and treat it as ISO 800 or 400. If it is kept at 8-bit, on the upper side of the curve it goes from 29 values per stop of light to 20 values per stop of light.

That recorder seriously ups the weight and flexibility of that size. You'd be better off with a FS5.

The Slog2 output of the A7s isn't *quite* there, there are highlight clipping issues and the base iso is just too high. It looks like the A7sII has sorted both of these (hopefully). I've also seen it mentioned that noise is more controlled as well. That's a huge difference too.

I know, i've been running an A7s with O7Q+, it's just too damn big. The Pix E5 is nice but quite heavy.

The beauty of the A7s is it's size, perfect on small gimbals.

+1000

And better noise control according to the same interview. Maybe no more blobby noise, like the A7rII

I've pre-ordered already...

This really forces Canon to do something with 5D MKIV ... that "something" being 10-bit internal, C-Log and a higher bit rate recording (optional).

Other than that, it looks like a nice new camera - a solid buy for the money - but not a necessary upgrade for your average shooter if s/he already has A7s + external recorder or even GH4.

But the jump in technology from year to year makes me think that a "perfect camera" for under $5,000 will be arriving next year already.

Cool, looking forward to your observations once you have the camera!

re: DR
The s-log3 chart for the A7sII on Sony's site suspiciously gets into a dashed line at the point where s-log2 clips. I'd expect similar DR and wherever there are gains they will likely be in the shadows (less noise, more shadows tonality), not the highlights.
