a7S II announced!!

There're the two main reasons i'd upgrade and the FS5 looks nice too...

I think the event is going on now...

cheers

For me, it depends on the price. At $2300, I'll upgrade just for internal 4K and IBIS. If the price starts to get close to the a7R II, then it needs to have something else. Like slog3, or higher frame rates.

wooooooooooaaaaahhhhh!!! It has both slog3/sgamut3.cine and 1080p120. Pleeease let it be sub-$3K, and my a7S hits ebay next week.

Before you get too excited is the rolling shutter as bad as the V1 which made it a toy and unfit for purpose as a professional tool?

Sony are making all the others look silly now, Panasonic have a serious battle on their handles now for the hybrid class.

I wonder if they cured the over heating and stop recording issue?

My main questions right now:
* Price?
* Does it overheat at 4K?
* Minimum ISO for slog3?
* Does 1080p60 have aliasing/moire in FF mode, as in the a7S? And 1080p720? And in APS-C mode?

First one answered, and it's a bummer:
The A7SII will be available in November 2015, at 3400€. (which probably means $3200)

That post also has sample movies, which I can't watch right now...

I kinda figured the the price was going to increase, damn. I'd rather throw money at a serious video machine like the FS5. I don't really think they fixed the 4k overheating issue that quickly either.

Okay, so you guys beat me with the price. It seems every new Sony body is going up quite a bit! And the A7S hasn't come down all that far itself yet.

i hope it doesn't overheat! The fact that the A7RII overhears was quite a negative surprise. Adding another $1,800 for a mandatory external recorder is a big hit- that would get you up to $5,000. Plus media, rig, etc.

No info about rolling shutter, but the IBIS will minimise Jello, and that's the biggest issue for me. It does appear to be a different sensor though because the AF has improved and AFAIK that is on sensor.

Looking at the low light video there's the suggestion that base iso is 1600, that's a good change from 3200.

The Slog3 gives hope that the highlight skewing is under control now.

My only issue is that internal recording is still 8 bit and with a SLog3 range that's compromising the tonality and there's no info on bit depth of HDMI out but it's a safe bet that it is 8 bit too.

That's the only remaining issue, but even so i may have to bite the bullet...

cheers

* Being contrast-detect, the fact that there are more AF points doesn't necessary mean that it's a different sensor. A change in processor sometimes can achieve that.

* If overheating on the a7R II is happening at the sensor, not at the processor, the a7S II could very well be free of overheating.

* Slog3 at 8-bit means 20 values per stop of light, which is very low. But I'd rather fight banding than clipped highlights or horrible shadows. In any case, sgamut3.cine is great, a lot better than sgamut, and it should help a bit against banding (because it's more saturated, so you're actually going to use those 8 bits in the color channels).

I agree but just think what 10 bit would have given...

If you're going to compress 14 stops (yeah right) into 255 values then you're almost certainly going to be adjusting the image, which means more tonality is required.

The slog3 test shows better DR than slog2, as expected.
And 1080p120 looks pretty nice. Not the sharpest 1080p video ever, but I see no artifacts. Which also bodes very well for 1080p60 being just as nice as in the a7S in APS-C mode, but with no artifacts in FF mode.
And $3000 is better than I expected from the Euro price. Which is silly because it's exactly as I should have expected: here we have to add VAT, and the cost of the mandatory two-year warranty.

In any case, my a7S is not hitting ebay just yet, because the switch to the new one would cost me at least $1300, and also because I'd be without a camera until November (Xmas, actually, since I need the US version for 24p and that's when I could get it). My next big project will be shot on May. Lots of thinking will go on between now and then...

And Gamma assist + fully customizable zebra is pretty cool.
Curious exactly how unusable s-log3 will be even with 4k scaled down. :P
