A7s Custom White Balance Is Bonkers!

Looking at the snippet from the manual in the previous page, it's going to work sometimes, but often it's going to require that you overexpose a few stops before it works.

Yes, including Slog2, PP7. I did encounter the glitch once in Slog2/PP7, I opened up the iris and it worked fine. The first body I had failed no matter what PP or exposure.

Custom WB does not work well in S-Log2. Not a faulty unit. It does work sometimes but requires a certain exposure range, so in effect, sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I would dial the WB manually in S-Log2, or use another PP if Custom WB is needed.

Interesting. I just tried several times by going from 0 to +2 stops and beyond with no luck on any attempts. The option to change profiles isn't an option if Slog is preferred and dialing it in in tricky lighting conditions isn't either. This really should work. It does worry me that some are having no issues and I'm just not able to get it to work. I'm not using native lenses so maybe this has something to do with it. Have the EF to E Mount Metabones adapter.

Interesting point about the native lenses. I was having the problem when I had my Metabones adaptor connected. I just sold that 24-105 lens, and will be picking up the Sony 24-70/F4 soon.
Another thought- I wonder if you'd be better off taking a WB reading in that %800 rec709 profile that's to be used as a sort of LUT for S-Log. Wondering if colors would be more precise.?

The WB is definitely a little wonky, especially with PP7. I got the neon green error msg that Erik posted earlier, but then I opened up the aperture until the meter read +2ev and the custom WB was fine. This was with the FE55.

Anyone found an easy way to set this one up without diving into the menus since its in the gamma settings? The only thing I could think of was setting up a duplicate profile on C1 or C2 with the gamma set to the 800% ITU709 setting and switching back and forth.

Just discovered that you can't set AWB in custom mode but AWB works every time with S-Log if you overexpose.

Does AWB stick through a shot, or does it adjust depending on the light? I never liked auto-anything, but if it sticks I could go lazy... (given that custom WB seems to have issues)

ok, then it's just a matter of overexposing even more before you do the custom WB

Yeah... another bloody step just to get a WB. Grrr Sony :nads: I'll pull out the Colormeter II and run some checks but so far the custom WB has been good. I'm also trying to determine what proNDs I should get, I think I'll need at least 3 to cover every scenario.

And which three are you leaning for?

My plan is 3-6-9 stops (8x, 64x, 500x), but I won't buy any of them until I have played with the camera.

None of the tricks are working for me in Slog and Custom White Balance. I purchased the ExpoDisk and if I go 2 stops over and have the camera lens aimed at the light if will WB without the error if I tilt the camera to eye level facing the light it errors. At least I can get it to work now. I've wanted one of these pop on WB filters for a while. It works very well and really does give you a better balance than using a gray card.

I've decided to get a replacement since I'm right at the 30 day return window. Then I have another 30 days to evaluate and decide if the camera is for me. This WB issue does bother me. Also in 120 fps again in Slog I got so much RGB noise it seemed excessive. Granted I didn't over expose when I shot it. Didn't know about that yet. We shall see. Goes back Monday.

Not sure yet, depends whether I decide to get a speedbooster. Need to do a few more tests.
