A7RIi vs A7SII - going crazy, cannot choose

A7sII no overheating, better low light (but a7rii with MSB will not be far away)

What was your tipping point feature to chose one or another??

My A7sII overheated when shooting 4k internally. I typically got 4-6 minutes which is about the time you need to change the Wimpy Battery. I sent it back and kept my A7s.

If I were to choose between the them, I would choose a A7rII.
I would also get a dummy battery to use with external power source.
You can use the Camera longer because it does not over heat near as fast.

Another way to avoid overheating is to use an external recorder.
Not only is the Codec way better but there is no "up to" 30 minute limit.

Thinking about this question myself - I want good photo and video so am leaning towards the A&Rii, but do need to film in low-ish light...

How low does the light need to before the A7Rii starts to struggle. How will it handle with nightime shooting, indoors, with say a single lamp in a 3m x 3m room. (Nowhere near as dark as 'moonlight'.)

I assume the A&Rii can film 1080p in full-frame? Is there still an over-heating issue in this mode, or can you record for the full 29mins?

Thanks

Apologies if this is common knowledge, but do the A7S II & A7R II share the same screen? I can see they have the similar specs but are they identical?

In response to a question I asked, I was told that the consensus is that the S is about 1.5 stops faster than the R.

Picked up an A7Rii a couple of weeks ago after debating low light needs, decided stills are just too important in my line of work so went with the high pixel count for stills. After two weeks and about 30 hours of footage, and the unplanned purchase of the latest 5k iMac to deal with the files, I find that I won't be dumping my canon bodies anytime soon for stills. Canon glass on a metabones adapter works well, but not to the point of being able to part the dslr world.
On the video side, the A7Rii for me now is irreplaceable. My attraction to the color space may have less to do with Sony and more to do with the fact that slog has forced me to work more on my grading skills.......whatever it is I'm addicted to 4K.
The ability to shoot high pixel counts when consistent fast focus isn't a requirement for stills outweighs the need for shooting video in the dark, so I'll just be a two-camera shooter.
As for overheating, pretty sure that's been a thing of the past for everyone. I've shot 6 29 minute clips in a row without a hitch. The video record button and menus don't even bother me........

^ Have you tried FE lenses for stills? If you're using AF, it's clear that adapted Canon glass won't cut it, but both Batis plus the 55mm just might.

So Far I've only worked with my L glass collection and a Rokinon cine 35- which is surprisingly sharp to my eyes. I'm old so manual focus isn't a taboo for non-action stills and video:shocked:

I've heard lots of good things about the Batis, and as soon as I get over my sticker shock of the A7Rii and a fully loaded 5k iMac I had to pick up a week later to deal with the footage, it'll be my check-it-out list. Luckily last time I checked B&H didn't have them in stock thankfully.

^ dang, built in ND- thats gotta add to the size of that thing. Would definitely be a cool feature. Yet one more thing to save up a few $$ for.

Thanks, I was just curious if you had tried it and still preferred your Canon kit for stills.

I've got my gear adquisition syndrome under control lately, but I know how hard it can be...
