A7rII 4k test Batis 25mm vs. Sony Zeiss 24-70mm

I agree. I have not tried the Batis but the 24-70 is pretty sharp in the center, sharper than the Canon 24-105 F4 I often use for run n gun. It's got a bad rap that I think is undeserved, though of course it's no 55 F1.8.

Of course the focus by wire system is absolutely horrible for video; makes it impossible to pull focus. For that reason alone I mostly stick to adapted EF glass on a Speedbooster on my FS7 (and now A7RII) to get that full frame look as well as an extra stop. I can stop down to get a sharper look, get that nice FF FOV, and mechanical, repeatable focus.

Sony is allegedly coming out with a new E-mount 24-70 2.8 (registered already in Russia). They had recently updated the same lens in A-mount, so this would make a lot of sense.

Where have you gotten this information?

I don't see where 2.8 comes into the mix, that's speculation (clickbait). What if its just a cheaper 24-70/4 G lens?

To the OP, I think the 24-70 has a worse rep compared to the image. But it got panned pretty hard because of the amount of software correction. That's just a reality of modern lens design when the goal is to keep things small/light. I've been eyeing the Batis 25 as a fast WA, any more thoughts on the lens? I love the wide open/closeup look of lenses like this.

I wish I could actually find one. I have both Batis lenses on order and no telling when I'll actually have either one in hand.

Thanks for posting.

Sony 24-70 seems to have a lot of copy to copy variation. I read another review from March 15 of this year with Imatest data. Their 2nd copy of the 24-70 (after they rejected the 1st as decentered) tested worse than the FE 28-70 kit lens that you can buy used for $225. Obviously the kit lens is not a constant aperture lens, but that is pretty disappointing performance for a $900 to $1,200 lens.

It it does seem like they need a much better standard zoom for the A7RII.
