A7R mk II Announced - 42.4MP, 5-axis Stabilization, Internal 4k, $3,200.

There's a little bit of moire on the FF video at :20, the metal roof just above the 300mm F2.8 text, but its barely noticable.
Barely? Where? Only at the wheel, shutters on the right and 2nd floor, and very barely aliasing indeed. Not else. Maybe downsampling issues, I guess. Other than that, I see nothing on my 82" projector screen.

Love the detail. There's a little bit of moire on the FF video at :20, the metal roof just above the 300mm F2.8 text, but its barely noticable. The shots at :24 of the post with the backlit flowers and the mask at :28 are soft, no pop compared to the rest.
Sorry, but I think it's wrong to draw too many precise conclusions from real life images and via Youtube. Too many variables. The samples are pretty good IMO (especially for a stills camera! :) ), but for accurate quality judgement about specific features, proper test images are needed.

As far as colour goes, then even starting with JPEGs I'd really like to do a blind test with someone who is convinced there is an intrinsic difference between "Sony colour" and "Canon colour". My experience is a bit of tweaking will make far more difference between anything intrinsic to the make. (Out of the box set up is onething, intrinsic hardware differences that survive grading another.)

Exactly.

One thing is certain, though. As Samuel has fairly pointed out, 5DII at wide end there would surely rainbow in every corner of such 'malicious' setup ;) Youtube wouldn't serve as excuse :-)

It is promising, to say the least.

The 5dII is what? 7 Years old. One would expect this camera to perform better than that. But in the A7rII I will say, "That highlight aliasing tho".

I'd say December 2014 a7II is much worse than a 5DII as far as aliasing/moiré concerns and a7RII was thought instead as 1st really hybrid of this series (a7S can be a way more useful as cine camera than as stills camera).

Canon had no particular idea what they were doing when they launched the mythical 5DII... Who on Earth didn't shoot with one? I guess even Jim Jannard tried one : D I know Jarred did it :-)

Just a side question...if the A7RII is being released in the next week or so, when can we expect the A7SII?

In order to not affect sales, I would expect the A7SII to be released next year, but maybe they are different enough cameras that they wouldn't step on each other? Or is it common for Sony to push different versions of products out shortly one after another? TY.

I read somewhere there won't be a7SII, confirmed by some SONY rep according to the messenger.

That said, a7RII would/will be the hybrid deal. And because of the newly developed 42.4 MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, putting resolution au pair with cine acquisition for once.

Certain people love detail... Have you ever heard about "cinema is truth 24 frames-per-second" (JLG)?

How come if you are unable to even print it in a large format without pixelation?
Time for true media convergence capture devices...

Personally, I am done with lowrez and softness crippled acquisition. I still remember when people here were used to praise 720p, like 1080p in hands of the final user might be able to damage their business based on the usual form factor video cameras. The point is DSLRs (now mirrorless) came to offer the democratization of big screen in hands of many and now anyone can release it there. You have no much need of a business plan, only talent ;-)

I know nothing. I've just read it. But, it wouldn't surprise me at all, considering the specs of the new sensor.

A7S is crying for a camcorder body - and the commensurate feature set - at about the same price range as DVX200. VG900 has been around for about three years and has never been a customer's darling anyway. FS100 and FS700 are nearing their end of their cycle too. So, it seems like Sony can kill a lot of birds with this one.

The FS700 is making a bit of a comeback with the 7Q+...there has been some really nice footage floating around here.

Ya but it's a ~ $7,500 combo as of now. A7S is $2,500. A A7S based camcorder - sharing the same sensor, with an updated feature set such as internal 4K - shouldn't run more than $4,000. Right now, Sony only has the small sensor 4K models in that range (AX1 @ $4,500 and Z100 @ $5,500, each two years old). If you look at their competitors, JVC has had an s35 MFT camcorder for $4,000, with a Metabones adapter, out for several months. Me thinks it's time for Sony to retain their "innovation leader" mantle in this segment and update their whole camcorder lineup.

Also...I haven't read through these pages and this must have been mentioned by someone, but isn't it bizarre the slow-motion capabilities are not in this $3K+ camera, but they are in the 10II and 100IV?

Why not at least 120fps!!?!

The sensor in the RX10 II and RX100 IV is a stacked sensor with onboard memory and a gazillion ADCs, it's designed for fast readout. The sensor in the a7R II is designed for resolution, and is just barely fast enough for 4K at standard frame rates (as reflected by the rolling shutter measurements).

I want an a7S II with internal 4K and IBIS for the same $2500 I paid for the a7S, or also with slog3 for the same $3200 that the a7R II commands. Sony has all the pieces so if they don't make it it's just by choice.

I also want an a7000 with the same body as the a7 II but with an APS-C sensor, doing clean internal 4K slog2 with IBIS, for $1300 (against $1700 for the a7 II). Or even put slog3 on that one too and make me pay $2000, I will do it.

I have a Sony problem.

I'm liking this camera. Since you can also crop down to S35 to get 4K, that has a lot of potential. (No pixel binning, less rolling shutter). Plus with built in stabilization, using a Metabones and any lens will be nice. I'll wait for real world tests by the pros though.

The rolling shutter is much worse in S35 mode than in FF mode. That's the downside of full readout without pixel binning. Here.
