Ahoy - trying to get this right for a local association contest this tuesday - TEAR IT TO SHREDS!!!!!

http://www.psynema.com/phillycrew/clipshare/view_video.php?viewkey=4197ff767970b6704169

Color Correction isn't quite done yet (usually do that last) and most likely am changing the music :violin:

Any other thoughts - is it too sterile?

Canon A1 and DVX100 mixed - I was a bit excited to get the Canon, so unfortunately mixed HDV and DV for the whole edit...never again. My Mac is hurtin' now.

i'm suprised you haven't gotten any comments. i watched this yesterday but i guess you've taken it down since then. it was a nice piece. i like the form you used - utilizing sections of the toasts as narrative v/o.

wish i could tear it to shreds for you, but it's really almost spot on. i'm not nuts about the music either, but it does work. the right music would certainly make it that much better. perhaps more shots of people and less of the steady environmental shots would be nice.

good job though. let us know what happens with the contest.

EDIT: looks like your site is down actually.

I finally got to watch this, site must have been down the other day. I thought it was fantastic, I usually skip through wedding spots, but I actually watched the whole video. The narrations really carried the story along. I'll reserve comment about the coloring because it's difficult to really see the detail in a compressed file. What was your audio setup? Because you really captured everything pretty clearly. Well done.

Psynema,

It's such a thin line trying to convey true friendship and love without making it corny or dripping with sugar but I think you took a different approach than what I usually see in other wedding videos.

You have a great cinematic eye and your shots were very movie-like. Your camera moves were constantly interesting and your edits creative and kept the pace going. The music you chose was, at times, borderline bombastic (in this particular context, I mean) but I think you got away with it.

I loved this piece. After the 3 1/2 minutes run time, I wanted to meet these people because I felt like I knew them. Usually, for me, wedding videos are all about the video itself and not the people in it. After a while, they all begin to look generic.

I think you have a winner here. I could probably watch it a bunch more times and give some advice on this and that but it doesn't need it.

Great work.

Thanks for the replies - yeah usually wedding clips drown to page 10 after an hour LOL.

Thanks for the kinds words - I won Bronze and will put up a link to the GPVA contest page when they put up their screening room.

Site is back up with the final product turned in and changed the link to the submitted version- really isn't much different from the last version as I was short on time.

SackSnack - Audio wise - Sennheiser wireless.

DeepFocus - Glidecam 4000 on the A1, sans vest - also if you have an A1, please get the vest, I'm really not to happy about the ergonomics of an A1 on the handheld unit, which is a whole other thread in itself LOL.

I'm very impressed! You are helping take the "wedding movie" to a whole new level.

This is really excellent work.

The glidecam shots, the saturated colors, and the toasts as voiceovers lend to a truly cinematic experience. Echoing Disjecta, I would say the one possible weak spot is the music, which gets old after a while. Something a little more contemporary or light hearted might be fun to try out.

(I just went back to the top and saw that you are planning on changing the music, so there you go!)

Congratulations on bronze in the competition!

Hi Psynema,

Sorry I missed your post on the 13th (didn't see it until last night after GPVA mtg). I observe, review, and critique lots of wedding videos including award winners in competitive events. I'd certainly put your work in the top quartile - very nice work. Your camera/cinema work is tops, editing fine (good voice-overs with creative J-cuts), well-timed music ducks, everything came together well (although the color saturation was a bit pronounced).

I'm in agreement with other posts here regarding the need to transition or switch music. The first 40-60 seconds seemed to work well with the sound bed but became anti-climatic and even a tad melancholy as the video progressed. With all the jump cuts (I like 'em), it's not easy to put my finger on the best point to fade into a new song - perhaps at the 1 minute mark would work well. On my last wedding video critique, I thought Aqualung's "Strange & Beautiful (I'll Put a Spell On You)" worked well with a definitive beat missing on your music bed.

And right on (arm) about the Glidecam 4000 - lugging around my XL-2, even with the 3X lens and off-camera mics (Sennheiser here, too), I gotta' use the wrist brace for shoots over 5 minutes. One of my PVA colleagues showed me how using a latex exercise band (over the neck, under the arm for gravity support) - but as you said, that's another post...

Cudos on grabbing some heavy metal at your PVA! Michael

Thanks - yeah finding music is always hard - have found a small portion of music that I really like - I aim for instrumental and lighthearted/sweet flavor, nothing too dramatic yet nothing overly too disney LOL - but hard to come by and what I've liked I've used quite a bit so really struggling to find pieces I like - one thing that's bothering me the most LOL.

What PVA do you belong to?

dam that was good i wish my wedding shoots were half as good. as you watch you dont even realize its an actual wedding. you get the feeling its a movie or commercial for a wedding store. it def gives the feel of something hollywood wrote up. great job you got my gold star.

Rehi,

I'm out here on the "left coast" in Sonma County (Wine Country New Media Association became our monikor after Professional Videographers of the North Bay). Agree, music and audio are biggies for us both. At last week's PVA, we voted on the 4everGroup PVA entries - many were excellent but a few were way over the top with inappropriate music and my colleagues all withheld votes for those videos.

Actually, when I got in this biz I never had a clue how much time or money I'd be spending on music (research, purchase, organize). Sometimes I feel like I'm a major shareholder of the royalty-free music companies, but there's nothing like the having the right music bed to sell the story. Then there's all that other stuff for private events (weddings, etc) - it never ends. No wonder me and my dog keep getting skinnier...

So I assume you enjoy classical music. Aside from all the normal stuff, some of the music beds used in the movies are popular with our colleagues. X-Ray Dogs, Immediate Music, E.S. Posthumus, Globus, etc have both a mix of dramatic and pleasant orchestra selections.

What are some of your favorite groups, songs, etc? (other than your Disney selections, of course - grin)

Happy Trails, Michael

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm a Napa County wedding guy myself. I'm kicking myself in disbelief that I've never heard of PVNB. Sounds exciting. I'd love to check out one of your next meetings.

I am flabbergasted by the video. Respect - this is how I want my wedding video to look like! 2 Thumbs up.

Not really classical or Disney - just something sweet but not dramatic. Usually come from various sources. And often I use videogame tracks - a bit more obscure and can sometimes fit the comical but still poignant mood.

The Ice Age intro is a fav, Yann Tiersen Comptine D'Autre Ete, Endtitle and Motion in a Minute by Yoko Kanno, Griet's theme by London Orchestra, Some Danny Elfman music - like Oakvale.

Wonderful! Great job, man.

Btw, which shots were the DVX and which the A1? Indoor vs outdoor?

Depends - You can kind of tell because the DVX was softer a bit granier and a bit off balance. All the Glidecam shots were A1 shots.

Misc:
A1 - CU of Bride, Parent reaction shots, Groom greeting the bride, Groom and Bride dancing at the reception with the strobe lights, Cake, Sister/Best Man toasts, Flower CUs

DVX - Father's Toast CU, Bride entering, Bride and Groom leaving, most of the formal first dance shots.

I guess it's good it's not obvious LOL - I was worried about them matching.
