A1 comedy short - grabs

Hey everyone. Just had a chance to shoot a little short the other day with my A1 for a friend. It was a small production, involving converting the friend's parent's kitchen into a restaurant. For light, I had a Lowel kit; 2 Omnis, a Tota (didn't really get used much), and 1 Pro light.

The shots included cc'd and original versions, since the original versions look kind of nasty on their own. Tried shooting with CC in mind, which I don't usually do (I usually try to get it right in camera) -- "exposing to the right" and shooting with the camera's sharpness turned substantially down to see what that looked like. From these stills, I feel like I might prefer sharpening in post to what I usually get from the camera setting; I'll have to look into it.

They're not full res, unfortunately, but I think they're high enough to get the idea. I could try to get some footage up if anyone is interested.

Nice compositions and lighting. I think the color corrected ones definately look better than the originals. I also like the red tones you got in the color corrected pics, kinda remind me of the look of Twin Peaks.

Also. What program did you use to sharpen in post?

I think your originals are better than your timed versions. Much more organic, and rich color palettes. All you would need to do is crush your blacks a smidge, and you could even add back those red tones you seem to like.

Apart from the large shadow of the waiter directly behind him in the master, the lighting is decent. If you think about it, why would the light be hitting the wall at that angle? Is their ever a practical revealed in that shot that would explain the intensity and angle of the light? If the light was falling at a lower position on the wall, it could be passed as an open face ceiling light, but as it is now, seems more to just be a sloppily placed key.

I also like the originals more. I think you crushed the blacks too much. There is absolutely no detail in the dark area now. I do like the grabs though.

Saying that i like the cc'd one of the last frames. Post up some footage of cc'd footage and orig footage!

I'd say that somewhere in between your originals and your current CC'd shots is the sweet spot you're looking for. Nice job on converting your mate's parents' kitchen - I wouldn't of picked for anything other than a restaurant.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Must say I'm rather surprised at people's fondness for the originals; to my eye their a bit too bright and two warm for the scene. Definitely something for me to think about as we work on it.

And Invision: definitely a good point on the master. If there were any shot I could redo it would be that one, but such is life.
