a1 & 1080p24

does the a1's "1080p24" work the same way as the hvx's "1080p24" works, the 1080i24PA method?

thanks.

No. The A1 employs "24F" mode, which involves two differences from the HVX's 1080i/24pA mode.

First, the A1 sources its footage from interlaced chips, rather than progressive. This causes a small drop in resolution but other than that, appears to work quite well.

Second, the A1 records its 24F to tape as 24 progressive frames. No pulldown, no interlacing, just straight 24P. Which is better, but makes the A1/G1/H1 incompatible with any Sony or JVC HDV camcorders.

Canon has an opposite mode for its other camera, the HV20. In the HV20 it actually images 24 progressive frames from a progressive chip, but records it in an interlaced data stream (same as the HVX's 1080/24P mode).

thanks barry,

if i shoot 1080p24, how do i capture the footage into FCP 514 for a 1080p24 edit?

thanks

Janusz,

All you do is hook up the A1 via firewire and select the "HDV 1080 24p" Easy Setup, and you're good to go. It's native HDV editing and you can output the 24p timeline back to tape if desired.

Be aware that native HDV editing needs a G5 or faster to be tolerable. On my G5 dual 2.7 it's a lot like DV editing, with some RT transitions, and a few RT filters such as CC. Don't expect a load of RT streams, but for general editing it works surprisingly well.

Where you will see a signifigant drawback is the "conform to HDV" process, which is where the computer resequences the GOPs for proper playback and output. Given that it's an interframe codec, renders for output are noticeably longer than with I-frame codecs such as DVCPRO HD, but at least you can output to tape as a backup. Lots of people are choosing to simply transcode to ProRes 4:2:2 with the new FCP 6 for better editing performance, but in general there are some workable solutions for HDV in FCP.

thanks elton.

my system is to slow to natively edit hdv. is there a way i can capture the 1080p24 hdv with an AIC set up?

janusz--I don't know how well a slower, say, G4 system can deal with RT transcoding to AIC. My guess would be that it could easily choke, but there are alternatives if you can wait a little longer for a utility program to transcode an m2t to AIC.

You should just try native HDV with your system to see if the performance is tolerable or not.

Ian--ProRes has two data rates: 145 mbs and 220 mbs, which is a lot more than 25 mbs.

i've tried native hdv at 1080i60 (sony fx1) and my comp almost died! but editing hdv once transcoded to aic was fine, even the capture was fine. so would there be a way to capture the a1's "1080p24" footage in aic or other intermediate format?

You could try making a custom capture preset and choose HDV 1080 24p for device control, but choose AIC for the codec. Might work, might not.

You can always capture raw m2t's via DVHSCap (Google it) and use MPEG Streamclip to comvert it to AIC 1080 24p. Sorry, I don't have time to break it down step by step, but look into either method and see what works for you.

i have FCP 514 but dont see hdv 1080 24p as an option for device control. do i have too old a version?

downloaded dvhscap. once i've capture from dvhs, do i export to quicktime (choosing my aic settings) with mpegstreamclip or do i demux to "something"?

thanks so much.

Sorry, I might've mislead you a little. Let me see if I can capture to AIC with regular HDV device control.

DVHSCap/MPEG Streamclip---You export to quicktime AIC with a frame rate of 23.976. Uncheck the interlace options and select 1920 x 1080 for a frame size.

i will test the dvhs/mpeg streamclip workflow with my buddy's fx1.

i will let you know tomorrow.

HDVxDV

HDVxDV

I've captured and converted to DV from HDV using DVHSCap and MPegStreamClip and with HDVxDV.

Either way seems to do a good job, one is with freeware and you do have to buy HDVxDV.

On my system (G4) the AIC option is greyed out so I can't review that performance.

Good luck,

MR

My question is, what settings are best to capture XHA1 into Premiere Pro 2, as it has no "1080 24p" preset. The only 1080 presets it has are "HDV 1080i (60i)" "Adobe HD-SDI 1080p 24" and a few other variations of those, nothing that uses 24p in a 1080 timeline. Suggestions?

You need to get a free update from Adobe that adds presets for the Canon progressive modes. You have to manually install it by moving some files into their proper directories but after that you should see a new folder in the list of presets titled 'Canon HDV'. In the folder you'll find presets for 24F, 25F, and 30F modes.
