"A Verse Before Dying" - AF-100 Western Short

Just so we're clear, Leo. I wasn't the one comparing the AF-100 to RED. On multiple occasions on this project, I've had people walk into the edit suite, see the footage, and comment that it's some of the best-looking RED footage they've seen. My experience with the RED is very limited, so I don't even feel equipped to make that comparison. But these people work with RED footage every single day in an editing environment, and if their reactions are any indication, the AF-100 is going to do very, very well.

Are there things the RED does better? Sure, absolutely. Are the projects the RED may be a better choice for? No doubt.

My reality is fully-checked.

I'm sure your reality is fully-checked. The wow factor in edit suites is always gratifying, however I've had very experienced producers mistake my VariCam footage for 35MM film, so I'm not so sure that a great deal of the "wow" in question isn't due more to our skills and the scene than the camera's native ability.

I might even go so far as to say that many of the modern cinema cameras, AF100 included, are capable of producing images so high in quality that it's very, very difficult to tell which camera was used unless we have perfect side-by-side shots. I've been doing this for a long time, but give me a scene that hides the presence or absence of film grain, and I cannot discern Red footage from 35MM film.

How many people here will claim that they can reliably name the cinema camera viewing different scenes very well lit and shot? I would certainly shy away from that challenge.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Speaking of which, Stephen, would you have any idea when we will be able to see some of Barry's film footage alongside the AF100 footage shot on set?

I thought Keanu was good in Parenthood and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. But come to think about it, his range is a bit limited. Heh heh!

What's the latest gents?

Just got a call from Stephen, the colorist's building caught on fire and destroyed all the masters and backups of Verse. Stephen made it out okay, and we're going to reshoot the project next week on my old GL2. They are tearing down the set at the new year so we've gotta do it quick!

Anybody have some old MiniDV tapes we can borrow? They don't have to be fresh, we can record over your old stuff.

Stephen is traveling at the moment, but I sure wish he'd post word for word the e-mail update he sent a few of us. It's quite gratifying!
