"A Verse Before Dying" - AF-100 Western Short

good job on the film. it seems to have been pushed way too hard in post though. the final image is extremely mushy almost to the point of being unwatchable to me. what gives?

Define - "mushy"

The lighting, scene set-up, wardrobe. etc - looks like it was designed to push the AF100 as hard as possible. Look at those dark browns. Even in a Vimeo clip they were brill. I did not see the macroblocking that is so apparent in those colors in a web color palette. I have not even looked at the Pro-Res clips. I did not see any noise and was amazed at the latitude. I do a lot of web encoding and this looked fantastic. The future of video delivery is the web. RANT: Why do you think the FCC is trying to take over the internet? Rant off......

Can you point out some example of what you feel looks mushy?
Watching it over here it looks crispy clean to me.

No mushy here either. What part?

the skin tones on their faces.by tones i mean the textures, seems to lack resolution and sharpness, even the likes of which ive seen in other af100 videos

Well done guys and gals.. and thanx for all your efforts in launching the new camera and posting your results with so much detail.

They have been invaluable from a real world pov.

Looking forward to what follows as other film makers , including me, get their hands on the AF100's from herein.

Glad you've taken something away from all this. You've hit on the exact reason we took this on in the first place. :D

I thought the production values were really solid; the camera work was fluid, the lighting was subtle and natural. The camera looked good except for some blow-out highlights. I thought the storytelling and writing left a lot to be desired tho. The dream sequence was confusing and just didn't work, and overall the editing had a clunky feel to it. I know a lot of effort went into this, and I respect that, but overall, not quite ready for prime time.

In regards to any blown highlights, it would probably be helpful to know specifically where you're talking about.
In regards to the storytelling and editing - I for one am always interested in hearing other peoples opinions/ideas ... so feel free to throw them out there. But in the end, like Stephen said, we understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Thanks for taking the time to watch.

LOL! Another funny, funny assessment. The "experts" speak out again. The internet at its best. This piece is as sharp as they come. These guys really know their craft and it shows. Great looking stuff.

I can appreciate your support John - but people are entitled to their critiques and opinions as long as they express them civily.
Let's make sure we keep things respectful on both sides here.

I honestly don't know what to tell you, Homunculus. I've just scrubbed through the Vimeo-encoded clip, the original .MOV file it was compressed from, and the ProResHQ color-corrected clips, and I can clearly see detail in many of the skin tones. In fact, our colorist remarked on how well the skin tones were rendered. I don't doubt that you're seeing what you're seeing, but it doesn't reflect what I see in the original footage, or any of the transcoded clips along the workflow. Maybe you could tell us just how you're viewing the clips?

I see pores, stubble and all kinds of detail.

I would love to hear them in logical terms too. Abstract opinions and critique is not my forte. Especially when saying that the faces in this case are not sharp is obviously not really a very good assesment. I know that a 100 to 1 in favor and praise is good enough. Great job guys.

I liked the exterior shots but wasn't too crazy about some interiors. A bit too bright and "glowy" for my taste which pull me out a bit. Good production though. Very nice sound design.

I've been making a living with a video camera for about 30 years, starting in the News arena, then freelance, now mostly documentary work. I've covered political conventions, the Olympics, Superbowls, and beyond. I've also picked up a couple of Emmy Awards for my camera skills along the way (San Francisco chapter).....and I'm still learning.

Welcome to DVXUser. I'm no-one...just another member. That said...you may want to provide some points of reference for your opinion. (ie: link to your work) That's a mighty big opinion....we'll all hope that your reel gives us a point of reference as to why it's so big. If its not....uh....chill just a bit. We believe in respect here...so make sure to show some. Cool.

Specifically, "I thought the storytelling and writing left a lot to be desired tho....and overall the editing had a clunky feel to it....not quite ready for prime time."

You must be entering the next DVXFest and you're going to show us all how it's done? This IS NOT personal from me to you. It's just getting a bit old to have someone with less than 50posts talking like they're Francis Ford Coppola. So...again...respect, right? Chill, right?

Oh...well...that's because I'm fat.

Looks great, Stephen. Thanks to all you guys for letting me take part.

Who are you Ben...? You cant be the real Ben. I saw you get shot in the head and you fell to the ground. stone dead.

Bet that smarted.
