"A Verse Before Dying" - AF-100 Western Short

Timur,

Is there any chance you can make even 5 seconds of RAW footage available? What about some 1080p full-rez stills? I'm curious to see what the stuff REALLY looks like as if I just shot it and loaded it up.

Just curious. :)

Did you find this to be an issue or non-issue? The focus assists seem to really rid the need for tape but were there some instances where you wished the marks weren't off?

Maybe the upcoming m4/3 mount Zeiss CP.2s will be a better choice to rent or buy.

Using tape to take marks is a nice option to have. I don't like asking actors to stare straight down the barrel of the lens so I can take marks. Luckily - as has been mentioned countless times - we had awesome director/actors/crew so it wasn't a problem. If this was a feature, however, that could get old very fast.

Fortunately, the Voigtlander+Zeiss ZF combo used for steadicam was spot on...and the lens was usually set to an F/8-11 split (if not an 11-16 split) so that made things nice and easy. No amount of peaking or focus magnification can replace well taken marks. Anybody can search for focus until the edges turn red. It isn't about searching for focus, it's about anticipating the movement of actors and/or camera. It's a difficult skill that I don't get to practice often.

According to Timur, you just have to "use the force" to find focus :D

:) I lifted that terminology from Tim Naylor, he used to tell me to use the force when I pulled for him.

With so many great non-cinema lens options it's really going to be a fun challenge as how to quickly determine near/far focus and keep actors in that zone.

Can't wait for the camera to arrive.

EDIT for creative idea: a really easy way could be to attach two cards with strong line art to to the opposite ends of a tape measure. At a given f-stop say the near/far distance is 10ft. The idea would be just to get 2 PAs to hold the tape taught at 10 feet and focus so that both charts are sharp

Wow, that was a lot to read. You all did a fantastic job. I watched the trailer and though the image looked fantastic, and I agree, on that grass, it was amazing how well it handled that. Thanks for sharing.

I did have one question, how did you like the Voightlander 85mm F1.1? Right now I have a Bower 85mm F1.4 lens and while it's nice, I find the contrast on the lens is just not as much as I like. I'm looking to replace it and at F1.1, that seems like a good lens to have for the AF100.

I only used it once on a extreme lowlight shot. It seemed to perform beautifully....

Ahh, okay, thanks for the clarification on the lens. I've been waiting for Sigma's 85mm F1.4 and got the Bower to hold me over, but still nothing from Sigma. When I've talked to them, the dates have come and gone that they quoted me.

Sweet! just realized I have been promoted to Hagrid Member. Time for a profile pic update I suppose.
