A trip to Russia

Glad you finished flip flopping and took the plunge finally!
Great clip, kids are cute. I'll echo what Martin said, the tones and feel of this clip is much more organic than a lot of the MKII clips I've been seeing. I think it also helps that you've not suffered from "I've got shallow dof and gonna use it syndrome" Still enough background detail and really shows the potential of the camera as a useable DSMC, he he.

GH1 just arrived this morning, charging battery!

hehe thx man. Yeah I was cured of the shallow dof syndrome shooting @ f/1.4 with the D90. It would have been a lot easier to shoot with the GH1.

got your clip squig, thanks again!

confirms that i will wait until 24p is doable, because the frame judder isn't acceptable for me. Bah, was ready to purchase one.. If only there was an easy way to convert on PC.. Bah.

Squig, that looks really nice.
How is the impression in a 30fps timeline?

BTW, which metering does Canon provide for manual lemses?
Something like 3d-Matrix, or just centerweighted?

I still cannot believe that there is no kind of metering for manual lenses on the D90...

hehe metering what metering....nada...zip. I was able to focus ok with the 135mm off the LCD but it's a struggle with a 50mm lens. You can get adapters that will utilize the red dot for focus for stills shooting.

not sure what ur asking about the 30fps timeline impression?

Squig,

when I lent a Mark2 for a shooting I realized it provides metering for manual nikon lenses, when shooting stills.
I didn´t look further as I rented it for a movie.
So my question is directed to metering for still photography.

30fps impression: as I understood, you put the files in a 24 fps timeline in FCP.
When you use a 30 fps timeline, does it look as good as in the 24 timeline?

thanks
David

BTW - beautiful children, lucky man!

hehe, we were born here.

The lead in the script for the feature I'm working on is an ABC (aust born chinese) girl. I wanna screen it in HK, some of the dialog is spoken in cantonese.

hehe, I don't feel so lucky at 5am every morning.

I only just noticed the ISO metering now that you mentioned it.

I haven't cut anything @ 30fps, coming from a PAL country 30fps just looks wrong to me so I'll be overcranking to 24p in cinema tools or frame interpolating in compressor until canon brings out 24p firmware.

Footage looks good, Squig. Glanced on the 22" HD Sony Production LCD, 36" 720p LCD next door and now it's playing on my 1080 46" Samsung LCD. In all places it looks very nice.

Looks nice overall and I'm really happy that there aren't any wrist-jitters going on. I also think those old lenses add a lot of subliminal character to the image. Unless that's the post adjustments I'm seeing (overall "soft" but still resolute image).

I do see the jerky 24p to 30p conversion, however I can see how people wouldn't notice it. In fact, it's even LESS apparent @ 42" playing back the downlodable file straight to an actual television. Which is strange, but makes sense: I see a lot less artifacts in general from any camera when they're being run through a "final" source, such as digital projection or one of my non-computer LCD's. This makes me think that even a Compressor 30p to 24p conversion would be plenty enough for small projects, dvds or blu rays. And realistically, that's all most of us will ever see, anyway.

Also makes me realize (after just doing a really bad output to 24p from Premiere, which is jerky as hell) that I would love this camera a bit more if it had 24p natively. Just my personal preference.

So most of this was at 135mm on the steady tracker and you were pulling focus yeah?

This is a great example for me and solidifies my choice on just going with my current frankenstein setup. It's about as steady as I'm getting at 300mm while pulling focus (footage soon) and still compact enough for me to hike up a mountain with it.

Thanks for posting this up. How soon are you getting to your anamorphic footages?

thx for the feedback man I appreciate it.

I added a bit of vignetting hence the softness and my focus wasn't always spot on....damn that LCD

Yeah I won't be doing the lazy 24p conversion again. conforming in cinema tools for an overcrank would look good. I bought it with the expectation of native 24p and if it doesn't happen I'll be looking for an alternative and I expect there will be a good one within 6 months.

Yeah 90% 135mm pulling focus on the steadytracker. I'm considering getting a blackbird, I posted some links in Bucks thread.

I'll shoot some anamorphic stuff by the weekend, just got a russian helios 58mm 44-2 really nice zeiss copy for $60.

Don't forget to put the frankenstein stuff back up.

I got accepted into RED school, 2 years 24 hours RED access and some EX1s.

Something puzzles me about your footage, Squig.

You said you only dropped the 30P into a 24P timeline in FCP and exported? What else did you do?

I frame-stepped through the downloadable file and honestly, for just an FCP timeline drop it's pretty fair to my eyes. Especially for only being dropped onto a timeline and no other rendering process.

You shot 1/50th shutter, there's plenty of action in the frame to spot anything tremendously jerky. Did you turn frame blending on or off? Did you export with a certain setting? 23.98 or 24 fps?

What all did you do exactly?

I've taken several looks. It's there but not that obvious. I did download it on the iMac and there was choppy playback but on my quadcore notebook it's pretty smooth for what it is.

That sounds very interesting, I'd like to know more. Are you going for a theatrical release??
