A trip to Russia

Ok here it is finally my first MKII clip shot with my Russian 85mm Jupiter-9 and 135mm Tair-11A. It was a bit of a struggle to grade because I started shooting with the standard picture setting and changed it to my custom setting so it was a bit of an effort to get the 2 looks to match. The light was also fading so the color balance shifted.

What do you think comrades?

nice! are those m42 lenses? The steadytracker looks like it performs quite nicely, looks a lot more stable then those other gunmount types out there.

thx

yep M42 lenses. 90% of it was shot with the 135mm tair-11a

I just dropped the 30p onto a 24p timeline in FCP.

I was wondering that as well, but it seems that FCP has a better time doing this than PP CS3. I downloaded your footage and imported it into a 24p timeline and noticed that there was no 4th dropped frame making every 4th frame more jumpy than the previous 3. Will look more in detail into the moving footage to see accurately.

*edit*
nm, its there :) Cool.

Is it dropping frames or just slowing it down?

I just went for the fastest option because I'm lazy and couldn't be bothered reading up on the workflows......and it took long enough to render all the prores, grading, and H.264. If it was a serious project I'd probably go with shake.

I'm uploading that panning footage for ya now....tried to last week but was getting an error msg.

its dropping a frame

if you crawl through your footage, you will notice with movement that every 4th frame has a bigger space between the previous frame and the coming frame. It just makes more of a jump between the two. Not hugely noticeable, but it may be with fast movements.

And let me know as soon as that footage is online!

is it wrong that im refreshing this page every 3 minutes to see if the video is available?

hehe, it's gonna take another 40min @ a speedy 24k per sec but I'm gonna get some sleep. I'll pm you the link when I get up

doh! Ill only get to play with it tonight at around 10 pm then. grr, another 10 hours!

Blast you and your strange time zone!

and since you're still online, how is the battery life on the mark 2? How much video can you take from one juicer?

I shot that whole clip on between about half and two thirds a charge. You get about an hour of shooting per charge.

the file I tried to upload is lost in cyberspace....here we go again another 2 hour upload.

Nice grading on the video. I watched the Vimeo version (not the download yet) and the motion looked like 24p to me. Meaning I didn't notice any jumps.

Looking forward to your anamorphic shots also.

thx my white balance was way off so I had to grade but I'm hoping to get much closer to that filmic look in camera with some tweaking. The standard look I keep seeing from others gives skin tones a nasty orange tinge, turns whitefellas into oompa loompas.

my panny anamorphic arrived like it had been used as a football. the rear glass has a big chip in the corner but I'm cropping a bit so it's usable. I just have to get some new screws and washers to get it to hold together. I'm gonna shoot some stuff with the optex 1.33x adapter now.

I don't see any jumps but I want the slowed down look so I'll do the next one in cinema tools.

Here is an example of the colors I am associating with the 5D mark II so far:

Awful plastic look.

Your sample looks like its coming from a Nikon and has very, very nice colors. I'm glad to learn that such look is possible. I'm starting to consider the mark 2 but I give Nikon a last chance to bring out an answer within the next two months.

Yeah I have to say after shooting with a D90 for 6 months I was a bit concerned when I looked at all the sample footage from the MKII, but I was reading Ken Rockwell's review- http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/5d-mk-ii.htm and he went on about how the canon does skin tones better than the nikons shooting stills so I figured it would be just a matter of tweaking the picture control settings. I shot it on the neutral setting with 0 sharpness -2 saturation -4 contrast.
The white balance was too cool so I warmed it up with some mid brown tone in the 3 way color corrector in FCP. I also de-saturated it more to about 78%

I had a look At the clip you linked to and yeah I've seen a lot of that, frankly I don't know how they do it I've never shot anything like that but I've only been shooting with 3000k CFLs maybe they're using tungstens or incandescents and I suspect the standand picture setting. I've managed to get the D90 look quite easily from the MKII without the lousy compression.

If you can wait I think Nikon are going to announce the D300 replacement in about 3 weeks and the D700 replacement around October. If Canon don't do 24p firmware and the Nikons have manual controls with a codec that equals the MKII I'll be going back to nikon.

Glad you finished flip flopping and took the plunge finally!
Great clip, kids are cute. I'll echo what Martin said, the tones and feel of this clip is much more organic than a lot of the MKII clips I've been seeing. I think it also helps that you've not suffered from "I've got shallow dof and gonna use it syndrome" Still enough background detail and really shows the potential of the camera as a useable DSMC, he he.

GH1 just arrived this morning, charging battery!
