F35: A touch of old Hollywood glamour...

Hey guys (and girls?),

I'll update the Bollywood thread when I get a spare minute, but I landed back in Australia a week ago today, had a production meeting that same night, a shoot the following day (on the F35), a commercial two days after that (again on the F35) and have been working every day since (and that'll continue through to next month). So things have been a little hectic, and there's LOTs of stories to round out my Indian adventures, so they'll need to wait a bit.

But in the meantime, on that first shoot back, I got to have a little fun with the old beast. Recreating a classic hollywood look for a film-within-a-film for a short I start on Tuesday.

It's a real headtrip lighting faces with a direct fresnel light, and then a hard fill coming from the opposite side to the key - the nuances in shadows and falloff across actors faces are so incredibly alien from the style I'm used to lighting in, that it took a great deal of concentration to stick to it, and follow through with the aesthetic.

The three sequences we shot will be output to VHS and then played within the film, and we're pretty delighted with the outcome so far. It's such a magnificent style, I hope there are further excuses that allow people to preserve it somehow.

My only gripe was that we sadly didn't have proper sets, and had to shoot across bluescreen - which severely limited the amount of diffusion I could use, and the nets I was going to put across the back of the lens, and the vaseline I wanted to put in front. In the end I just had a light net in front of the lens, and had to create the rest of the effects in the grade (which was okay, but it would have been nice to do it all in camera).

I did however manage to set a new personal record. It took me 45,000w of lighting to get these scenes! :)

It looks pretty darn nice. And the girl's dress and suitcase colors kind of wasted.

In terms of lighting, it's probably going to be a bit of, "now that we've tried this, let's try that". Like the film genres, it'll come around again.
