A simple request for Jan

Please give the HVX the capability to flip the image up side down in the viewfinder and LCD. Many of us Indie filmmakers intend up using inexpensive shallow D.O.F. devices that can’t flip the images themselves. Thank you.

A magnet is an option, but it's a naff and potentially dangerous solution. It can't be that hard to add a menu option as the software to flip the image is already there.

True, it (presumably) allready flips as do so many other LCDs when you flip it around, why not have it a selectabel menu option to force the flip?

If they were going to do this, it'd be far better (I think) to have the footage actually flip in the camera, instead of just having the LCD flip. You'd want the recorded footage flipped, because optically it's flipped by the micro35/G35, so if it gets digitally flipped in-camera, that means the result will be right-side-up on the tape/P2 card and also in the LCD...

There might be an issue with the processing power needed to flip the raw data - the monitor feed is proberbly lower overhead. - hmm, normal monitor flipping woudl cuase trouble with the OSD though..

I think if you flip it in camera before it gets recorded, than monitoring would not need to be attended, right?

Besides, flipping in camera without post-induced artifacting would be the best bet. And a cheap feature to implement, I'm sure.

Not sure how cheap. Even a prograssive scan CCD is read as a linear data stream, holding ad reversing that one frame at a time could be difficult. - you'd be inducing a 1-frame delay in the feed too.. which can be a ***** cor monitoring at times :-)

I believe the time for new features is out. I believe the camera specs and design are locked down, at least for the hvx200... Now if we talk about the possible hvx200a... :)

A HVX200A!!! When is it coming out! Should I wait for that rather than the HVX200!....

....hehehehe

I believe the Varicam has the option to record flipped footage specifically for this purpose, actually, so it's not out of the question. Ironically, the footage is NATIVELY flipped since lenses give upside down images, and all camcorders "unflip it" in the DSP. So it's not even a matter of writing new code, but having an option to turn the flip code off.

Anyhow, I've been posting this request for a while--to similarly unenthusiastic responses: "just use a magnet" "that's pointless," etc.--so I'm glad there's some interest. While most NLEs have real time footage flipping plug ins (flop in FCP), there's a limit to how many effects you can render in real time, and I think that the number would be much lower with high definition footage. (And I color correct virtually ever clip, so that's one RT effect right there.) So, really, this would be a very valuable feature, I agree.

Jan has never responded to anything on this subject, but I assume she knows about it since I've been so irritatingly vocal about it (sorry....). I guess we'll wait and see.
