A shotgun Mic first or a separate recorder(ex. H2n, DR-07)? Which one first?

Hi,
I'm on a very tight budget with about 170 dollars to spend on audio equipment. This limits me to either a Rode Videomic or a separate recorder. As far as I have read from the countless post both do separate jobs in filming. Correct me if I'm wrong but from my understanding

Shotgun mics are used to record audio.
Recorders(ex. H4n, h2n) are used to record ambient sound.

From this i derive my question: Which one should go first?
I'm recording off of a T2i with magic lantern. Should I go with a Shotgun mic or Recorder?
For shotgun Mic i was thinking of the Rode Videomic(or any other alternative near price range)
For Recorder i was thinking along the lines of a Tascam DR-05/DR-07MKII or Zoom H2n.

With your budget you don't really have a choice. The Rode Videomic is your only real option.

Most shotgun mics are used with stand alone recorders on a boom pole to record vocals. Mounting one to your cam is the exception not the rule. Recorders are used to record any audio from shotguns to wireless lavaliers to ambient. Mic selection for each is crucial and can run into the thousands each to do the job well.

Go to the audio section and read the stickies. Some incredible information there and you'll find that sound people are more passionate about their craft than anyone. A bare minimum audio kit is $1000+ and as they say, sound is 80% of your image :)

Cheers,
Pete
