A reliable video camera for, ugh, $40 dollars.

Impossible, I know.

All I have in my possession is a $40 dollar gift card for Amazon.com. I've never had a video camera before and I need to shoot a portfolio for the school I want to apply to. Is there a semi-reliable video camera in $40 to $70 dollar range?

If you find something for $40 it's going to be about as good as anything else for $40. So buy it. Schools can look past the toys.

That said, you might be able to save your $40 for something else by borrowing a camera, since it sounds like you only want to do the one thing with it.

ROTFLMAO...You are a very funny guy...What you may be able to do is auction off your gift card and look on craig's list

make a post on craigslist that you will trade a 40 dollar gift certificate for a days work from a cameraperson with their own equipment. And then start saving to pay an editor.

Right. Try to read that again, then read it again. If you still think it's reasonable, go to a cameraman and ask him to shoot a day for 40 bucks and make sure to tape his reaction :)

I would seriously consider borrowing - given the price range your'e looking at, you'd be better off borrowing pretty much anyone's camera than something you would buy for $40.

If you literally don't know anyone with a video camera - then find someone with a new iPhone, or even one of the new Apple Nanos. Both of those would probably shoot better video than what you're looking at in that price range.

Just realized this is from two months ago....
I wonder how this story wound up?

Me curious too :)
Borrowing is the best option... what are you getting for 40 bucks anyway? Maybe some old Hi8 camcorder, lol.
