A question about white balance...

I shot a few dances at a recital and white balanced my camera before the recital began. After each dance, the lights would dim out completely once the performer left the stage but would re-brighten once the next performer came on. Do I have to re-calibrate the camera for every performance? The reason I ask is because some of the shots became overexposed without me noticing. The first few dances were fine but a few later it looked all washed out... What exactly happened here?

It sounds to me like they simply increased the amount of light on that particular scene, and you didn't compensate by adjusting your iris. It has nothing to do with white balancing - unless they really changed the lighting color (but even then it might be for dramatic effect, so it's wise NOT to re-white). Just be careful and adjust your iris accordingly.
You didn't mention what type of camera you were using, and if it has full manual control over the iris. I would recommend you always shoot on manual iris, and adjust to each scene. No re-calibration is necessary.
Good luck on your shoots!
