A Nightmare with .mxf to quicktime for client

I recently shot a concert for a performer and am now in the process of giving them the footage, however, it hasn't been a smooth process so far.

I use Final Cut Pro 6, and log and transfer the mxf files so they become quicktime files.

NOW, I thought I could just drop those quicktimes onto an external HD and give them the HD and be done, but they are having issues playing back the quicktimes.

I thought it was an issue with the quicktime they were using but they have the latest version of quicktime PRO and they sill aren't working.

I then thought you needed the codec from Final Cut Pro 6 but I played the quicktimes on my old laptop with Final Cut 4 and they worked....

Sooo, HOW DO I GET THESE FILES TO THEM WITHOUT HAVING TO GIVE THEM THE MXF FILES???

Any help would be huge.

thanks

Jeff

If the performer does not have Final Cut Pro installed together with the DVCProHD codecs, then those QT are not playable

You would need to convert them to a codec that is compatible with their hardware.

Without knowing anything further, I cannot suggest one.

So if they have new iMac with the quicktime it comes with along with iMovie HD, how would I convert the quicktimes that have been created thru log and transfer to a version that they would be able to open?

You could batch compress them with compressor into something like h.264 or some other generic quicktime format.

or, just have them buy raylight.

No, I don't think buying raylight would work for the Mac, I think all the Mac programs REQUIRE the FCP DVCPRO-HD quicktime component.

Motion jpeg at 75% is pretty good, but that conversion comes after you have edited the clips.

You don't convert on ingest.

This maybe off the wall a little if you do not have access to a Windows PC....but I use P2 Forge to encode files mxf to avi (or mxf to mov)

I use this in the instance that I want to archive an mxf file outside of the P2 /mxf structure. ie a standalone editable file for either Mac or PC

Simple and fast

im in the same boat man... p2 + mac delivery is the devil. poor woman i shot for has to shell out for fcp now.....

Because you cannot do ANYTHING with DVCPRO-HD on a Mac, unless you own Final Cut Pro version 4.5 or later. Apple doesn't make the codec available in any other way. You can't view the quicktime files, you can't use raylight, you can't do anything at all.

I guess you could also get Premiere Pro CS3 on the Mac, that should overcome the issue as well.

Why does the woman need the original DVCProHD footage Tim?

And why can't you converted to motionjpeg at 75% or even h.264?

just copy the QT Codec package out of your system library and onto thier computer. same folder. done. do it all the time.

its System Hard drive> Library> Quicktime Copy all files wth DVCpro HD in thier name to the same folder on the other computer
