A new toy

@ Freshmeat-I think I'll pass on that mixer. I don't even want it for a backup. But check the forum below. Sign up for it and start reading around. Good luck with your decision.

Nicole, thanks for the link. I'll sign up asap.
Rippie, certianly things you say will influence me. espically when I agree. thats what its all about. your reasoning is sound.

@Fresh Meat-What do you currently do sound wise? Are you in the market for a recorder or are you geared more towards a mixer? There are more options out there that are worth looking into as well.

Also are you still in Ohio? If so there is a rental company called Ohio HD Video. Call them at 614 327-3388 and see what audio mixers they have and if you can test them out. They are in Columbus, Ohio so not sure how far you are from there.

what do you guys think of azden?
are they noisey?
i cant find any reviews

Fresh Meat, please do a search. I've posted several times about my experience with Azden mixers. Just to summarize: Azden mixers truly are terrible. The worst. Two tin cans and string sound better. (and just to cover myself, legally) Allegedly.

:)

Just my $.02.

Fresh Meat, what is your sound experience (what have you done in the past/ how much do you know) and what are you trying to do? The SD 788T is a rather high-end piece of equipment and if you are just getting into sound something like a DV Promix6 or an SD 302 would work better for you and would teach you more.
I apologize if I have miss-characterized you and you are a seasoned profession.

Hi Nicole,

Currently, I don't do anything for sound, except study, read lotsa books and practice. So far, I am in the market for both mixer and recorder.
I have given much thought to production and, I think I would not want to be attached to the camera. So much more freedom. Also to be attached to one camera for sound when there are two running cameras would be limiting.

From what I understand, It will be a good thing to manipulate sound before it gets to the recorder. I do agree that there are many things that can be done in post. It just seems like it would be easier to work in post with as much sound distributed to many tracks, instead of cramming so much onto 4 tracks. Is this a good train of thought?

Right now I am working in Iraq, in a totally unrelated field so, the chance for me to go to a rental co. to test different units is not gonna happen. :( I know it sounds silly to be doing this from such a distance. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I make a mistake AND BUY A CRAPPY MIXER :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
A big problem I do have is transporting all of this equipment to China.

Hi David,

I have rudimentary experience. I'm sure it will be several years before I might:cheesy: be considered a seasoned Pro.

I do understand what you are saying about the 788T. But I don't see anything out there that has as many tracks as the 788T.
As I said in my reply to Nicole, My idea is to separate as much sound onto as many tracks as possible.
It just seems like it would be easier to work with my sound if it were separated as much as possible.
It can all be edited and mixed back together in post right?

Hi Phil,

I already bought an Azden. :2vrolijk_08:It looked kinda cool. No, just kidding. Now, the 788T looks cool. Really, I'm just kidding. The thing will be in a bag anyway.
I will always appreciate your .02

How many mic's do you plan on using at once?
a boom and 2 wires, plus a mix and you're looking at 4 (744T, with a mixer)

Its good to plan ahead but also in my opinion
don't over shoot. Figure out what you realistic will be doing out in the field
before you just plop down a large amount of money.

@Fresh Meat-FYI the 788T is not the only machine capable of 8 tracks. I recommend you read up below. I have posted a non linear recording comparison chart. If possible I advise you to intern or possibly work with a seasoned sound mixer and see how they are doing things.

This pdf will show you that the 788T is not the only recorder capable of 8 tracks.

Hey Rippie,

At least 4 but, Some footage I will want to get in China will involve several person interview 4+ lavs, I didn't want someone trying to boom so many people. Plus room noise, I was thinking it would be a good idea to run a constant grab, plus interviewer, plus roaming mic for crowd spots, that's 6 at min. It seems like a mess. There are some Chinese TV shows I'd like to cover. They are very interesting. Also student gathering at university. I guess I could be looking at this all wrong.

@Fresh Meat-Make sure you know the best used wireless FQ in that area so you are stuck with issues. If you are going to be using a lot of wireless I suggest looking at setting up an Antenna station. But you definitely want the boom for ambiance/room tone. Look at the pdf I posted.

Hi Nicole,

Thanks so much for the chart. I didn't realize there are so many choices. It looks like anything with 6 or more is still up there. A thought I have is, I can combine several mics on one channel right? But, wouldn't there be a problem with someone over talking another speaker, and a problem cleaning this up?

@Fresh Meat-Why would you combine several mics on one channel? That's not even possible. Its one mic per XLR input or am I not understanding you? If you have 4 lavs then each needs to be connected to an XLR input. So lav 1 input 1, lav 2, input 2, etc... now you have the ability to control each track/channel with the fader/knob. Does that make sense?

For the record the 788T is a 12 track machine.
Not 8.

@Rippie-I never said it wasn't a 12 track but it is CAPABLE of 8 tracks. If he read up on it(which I assume) it clearly states its an 8 input recorder with 12 tracks. Yeah that pdf is wrong but I didn't make that just something for him to go by for researching purposes. But good call either way.

Perhaps he means mixing more than one mic to one output channel. That can work.
Bernie

yep, thats what i mean

That is what I meant to say. So if I have two or more mics going to the same track, and they all speak at once............then I can't manipulate as easy. correct ?
